Aizawl Railway Link Enhances North-East Connectivity
The recent connection of Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital, to the national railway network marks development in North-East India’s transport infrastructure. The Bairabi–Sairang line, stretching 51.38 km, is important addition to the region’s connectivity. This project not only facilitates easier travel but also aims to boost economic growth and regional integration.
Project Overview
The Bairabi–Sairang line is a 51.38-km railway project with a budget of ₹5,021.45 crore. It has achieved over 94% physical progress and nearly 97% financial progress. The line includes several engineering feats, such as 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges. The project is divided into four sections, with one section already commissioned.
Engineering Challenges
Mizoram’s difficult terrain posed engineering challenges. The line features a notable bridge, Bridge No. 196, which stands at 104 m, surpassing the height of the Qutub Minar. The construction involved advanced techniques to navigate the hilly landscape, ensuring safety and durability.
Broader Connectivity Efforts
The Bairabi–Sairang project is part of a larger initiative by the Ministry of Railways to connect all North-East state capitals. Similar projects are underway in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, and Tripura. These efforts aim to enhance regional infrastructure and promote economic development.
Future Projects
Several other railway projects are in progress. The Dimapur–Kohima New Line aims to connect Nagaland’s capital by December 2029. The Murkongselek–Pasighat New Line will improve connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, scheduled for completion in February 2026. Additionally, the Sivok–Rangpo New Line will connect Sikkim to the national network for the first time.
Economic and Strategic Implications
Enhancing railway connectivity in the North-East is expected to improve defence logistics. Faster movement of military personnel and equipment to border areas will be facilitated. Furthermore, improved transport links can stimulate local economies by providing better access to markets and resources.
Budget Allocation
The budget allocation for North-East railway projects has increased . For 2025-26, ₹10,440 crore has been allocated. This funding supports various projects, including station upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, enhancing facilities at key railway stations across the region.
