Ahmedabad’s IKDRC Sets Record With 500 Kidney Transplants
The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre at Ahmedabad Civil Medical College has created a new national benchmark by completing 500 kidney transplants in a single year. Achieved in 2025, the milestone makes it the only public sector hospital in India to reach this figure within a year, reinforcing its leadership in government-run transplant care.
National First in Public Healthcare
Operating under the Gujarat government’s Health Department, “Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre” has emerged as the top-ranked public hospital in India for kidney transplantation. Official data show the institute had completed around 400 transplants by November 2024. In 2025 alone, it crossed 400 transplants by October 7 and reached 500 by year-end, an unprecedented achievement in the public healthcare system.
Broad Patient Reach Across India
Of the 500 recipients, 367 were men and 133 were women. While 330 patients were from Gujarat, as many as 170 beneficiaries came from other States, underlining the institute’s national footprint. The centre has consistently served economically weaker patients, offering advanced treatment at affordable costs while maintaining high clinical standards.
Specialised and Technology-Driven Transplants
The 2025 transplant tally included 157 cadaver transplants, 90 swap transplants, 49 paediatric transplants and 43 robotic kidney transplants. These complex procedures were enabled by advanced medical technology and highly trained multidisciplinary teams, highlighting the institute’s capability in handling specialised and high-risk cases.
