Aditya Pandya Becomes India’s Youngest Analogue Astronaut
Seventeen-year-old Aditya Pandya has become India’s youngest analogue astronaut after completing an eight-day simulated lunar habitat mission in Dholavira, Gujarat. The mission placed four crew members inside a container-based habitat under strict isolation protocols, replicating conditions similar to a Moon outpost. Beyond participating as a crew member, Pandya played a critical engineering role by designing and testing key systems used during the mission.
Dual Role as Engineer and Astronaut
Pandya’s achievement stands out due to his dual responsibility. Over six months, he reportedly developed hardware, biometric monitoring tools, safety sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) systems that powered the habitat. Several components were 3D-printed, while a digital twin of the habitat enabled mission control to monitor performance in real time.
Experts note that few analogue astronauts test technology they have personally designed during a live simulation. The habitat systems were aimed at ensuring crew safety, environmental monitoring and operational efficiency under isolation.
Simulated Lunar Mission in Dholavira
The mission was conducted in the white desert terrain of Dholavira in Kutch, chosen for its Moon-like landscape. The crew lived in confined conditions with limited resources and no direct external contact. Daily routines included scientific experiments, mock spacewalks and system reliability checks. The mission also studied human behavioural responses to isolation and teamwork under stress.
Analogue missions are considered vital for future planetary exploration. They allow scientists to test life-support technologies, habitat designs and crew endurance before actual space deployment.

Pandya completed his 10+2 education in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. He later pursued studies in Generative Artificial Intelligence from the Indian Institute of Management, focusing on data-driven decision-making and innovation.
