Early Life and Military Service
K. G. George was born in February 1931 in Kerala. He later joined the Indian Army and served in the Corps of Signals, a specialised branch responsible for managing battlefield communications. Established in 1911, the Corps of Signals plays a crucial role in ensuring secure and uninterrupted communication between different military units during operations. George’s service in this unit placed him at the centre of critical communication tasks during wartime.
Bravery During the 1965 India-Pakistan War
George earned the Vir Chakra for his exceptional courage during the 1965 India-Pakistan War. According to the official citation, between September 6 and September 10, 1965, he led his section in restoring disrupted communication lines in the Wagah sector despite heavy enemy shelling and air strafing. On the night of September 8–9, he risked his life to establish communication between the Brigade Headquarters and forward battalions during an enemy attack. His determination ensured uninterrupted coordination among frontline forces at a crucial stage of the battle.
Recognition Through the Vir Chakra
For his gallant actions and devotion to duty under extreme battlefield conditions, George was awarded the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award.
