UK Nationalises British Steel from Jingye

The United Kingdom nationalised British Steel on 16 July 2026 and transferred full control of the company from Jingye Group to the UK government. Jingye Group, a Chinese steel company, acquired British Steel in March 2020 for £70 million. The company later sought compensation after the nationalisation and stated that the business was losing about £700,000 per day by 2025. The UK government said an independent valuer will assess whether compensation is payable to Jingye under the nationalisation framework.
