Tamil Nadu Raises CMCHIS Cover to ₹25 Lakh

Tamil Nadu increased the annual health insurance cover under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh. The announcement was made in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly under Rule 110 on 19 August 2026, and the state also approved new health and welfare measures linked to public healthcare, cancer care, nursing education, and maternity benefits.

Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme

CMCHIS is a state health insurance scheme of Tamil Nadu that provides cashless treatment for eligible families in empanelled hospitals. The revised cover of ₹25 lakh places the scheme among the higher-value state health insurance programmes in India. The scheme was expanded to include specialised medical and surgical services for transgender persons at seven government medical college hospitals.

Health Infrastructure and Cancer Care

The state approved ₹300 crore for a 400-bed multi-super-speciality hospital of international standards in Perambur, North Chennai. It also allocated ₹677.44 crore for the Chief Minister’s Cancer Care Mission and ₹471.80 crore for a new integrated cancer treatment unit at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai.

Five new regional cancer centres were also announced as part of the cancer care expansion. The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital is one of the largest government hospitals in Tamil Nadu and functions as a major tertiary care institution in Chennai.

Medical Education and Welfare Measures

The government announced ₹351 crore to establish seven new nursing colleges and to expand seats in existing nursing and pharmacy programmes. Nursing colleges in India are regulated through state health departments and are linked to the training of registered nurses, midwives, and allied health personnel.

The state also extended paid maternity leave to 365 days for female government employees having a third child. In the agriculture sector, Tamil Nadu announced a full waiver of cooperative farm loans up to ₹75,000 for more than 1.38 lakh farmers and revised Aavin milk procurement prices.
