Taiwan Approves NT$240 Billion Drone Budget

Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan approved the National Defense Autonomy and Unmanned Vehicle Industry Development Act on 27 August 2026. The law authorises a six-year budget of NT240 billion, or about US7.6 billion, for drone industry development and defence procurement.

Legislative Framework

The Legislative Yuan is Taiwan’s 113-seat unicameral legislature. The bill passed by a 60–50 vote along party lines, with support from the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People’s Party. The legislature also rejected a competing special budget of NT210 billion, or about US6.6 billion, proposed by the Democratic Progressive Party government.

Budget Structure and Oversight

The approved law allows annual allocations of up to NT$40 billion from the general budget. This structure subjects funding to yearly legislative review rather than a single upfront disbursement. The Ministry of Economic Affairs will oversee overall industry development, and the Ministry of National Defense will handle military drone procurement.

Drone Procurement and Industrial Rules

The procurement framework covers coastal surveillance drones, coastal attack drones, and small target acquisition drones. The law also requires a dedicated drone strategy committee chaired by Taiwan’s vice premier. The legislation includes penalties for subsidised manufacturers that use high-risk components, including parts sourced from China.
