Southern Railway Achieves 100% Electrification
Southern Railway has achieved 100% electrification of its Broad Gauge network, covering 5,068 route kilometres. The milestone was completed after electrification of the final 71-km Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi section in Tamil Nadu.
Broad Gauge Electrification in Indian Railways
Broad Gauge is the standard railway gauge used on most of the Indian Railways network. Electrification of BG routes allows electric locomotives to operate on overhead traction systems instead of diesel traction.
Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi Section
The Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi section is a 71-km railway line in Southern Railway. Its statutory inspection was completed on 9 September 2026 by Ganesh, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of Southern Railway. The section forms the last remaining part of the zone’s BG network to be electrified.

Operational Features of Full Electrification
Full electrification allows seamless electric train operations across the zone. It removes traction changes between electric and diesel locomotives on electrified routes. It also supports better locomotive utilisation and lower dependence on fossil fuels.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a metre-gauge line of 46 km in length. It is technically unfeasible for electrification and therefore continues with classic steam and heritage diesel traction. Southern Railway’s electric traction history began in 1931 with the introduction of electric services in Madras. The zone’s BG network now operates fully under electric traction.
