India and Japan held their sixth Maritime Affairs Dialogue in a virtual format on September 9, 2021. The consultations involved exchanges on developments in the maritime security environment, regional cooperation activities and opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has resigned. Mr. Rupani met the Governor Acharya Devrat and submitted his resignation. Mr. Rupani had taken over as the Chief Minister in August 2016 after the sudden resignation of the then C. M. Anandiben Patel, who is now the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

Veteran India sports administrator Randhir Singh has been appointed as acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) after incumbent Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah had to step aside after being found guilty of forgery by a Geneva Court. He had served as Secretary General of the OCA for 24 years from 1991 to 2015. The 72-year-old Mr. Singh, a five-time Olympian shooter, is currently an Honorary Life Vice-President of the OCA. He also served as the Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from 1987 to 2012 and was a full member of the International Olympic Committee from 2001 to 2014 before becoming its honorary member.

World First Aid Day is observed on the second Saturday of September annually. So, this year the day was celebrated on 11 September across the globe. The special day is marked to encourage people in first aid training which helps in preventing injuries and saving lives in critical situations. The theme for World First Aid Day 2021 is ‘First aid and road safety,’ according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

India and Singapore have announced the linking of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and PayNow, in order to enable users to make instant, low-cost fund transfers. The project to link the fast payment systems of both the countries was announced by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). This linked payment interface is expected to be operationalised by July 2022. Linked interface will help in making instant, low-cost fund transfers on a reciprocal basis without onboarding onto the other payment system. PayNow is the fast payment system of Singapore, enabling peer-to-peer funds transfer service.

Gujarat-based ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) signed a pact with National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) to provide critical steel products to MSMEs in the sector. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) will utilise its hypermart network for the initiative. MNS India and NSIC teams will develop a network which will deliver critical products to the hard-hit MSME segment. This is a first of its kind MoU signed by NSIC with a private steel company.

NITI Aayog has launched a report on measures to ramp up urban planning capacity in India. The report is titled ‘Reforms in Urban Planning Capacity in India.’ The report has been developed by NITI Aayog, in consultation with concerned ministries and eminent experts in the domain of urban and regional planning. It presents a condensed outcome of the extensive deliberations and consultations conducted over a period of 9 months.

China has applied to join the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Grouping composed of 11 countries to increase its influence in international politics. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao submitted the application to the Trade Minister of New Zealand as a representative of Comprehensive & Progress Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) or the Asia-Pacific free Trade grouping. CPTPP was a group promoted by former USA President Barack Obama to increase its relations with Asia. CPTPP comprises of Brunei, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, New Zealand and Vietnam.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MoS for electronics & information technology has inaugurated three National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) centres. One of the NIELIT centres was inaugurated in Churachandpur district of Manipur while, two other centres were inaugurated in Tezpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. These NIELIT centres will soon become job creation centres in partnership with the Centre and the states. These centres will not only be training centres, but also centres for improving the qualifications of young people and providing them with new opportunities and jobs.
