O P Bhardwaj, India’s first Dronacharya awardee coach in boxing, passed away at the age of 82. The veteran coach won the Dronacharya Award in 1985.
Bhardwaj was India’s national boxing coach from 1968 to 1989 and also served as a national selector. Under his coaching stint, India boxers won medals at the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and the South Asian Games.

Notes:
A low-pressure region has been developed in the Central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensity into a very severe cyclone.
This has been named as “Yaas” and the name has been coined by Oman. The cyclone is expected to make its land slide in Odisha – West Bengal region, as per the IMD.

Cheetah, the world’s fastest land animal which was declared extinct in India in 1952, after the country’s last spotted cheetah died in Chhattisgarh in 1947.
The animal is expected to be re-introduced into the country in November this year at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) prepared a cheetah re-introduction project a few year ago.

Every Year, 23rd May is observed as World Turtle Day, which is aimed to make people aware of turtles – tortoises and their habitats. The theme for this year’s turtle day is “Turtles Rock!”.
This day has been celebrated widely since 2000 by a non profit organization named American Tortoise Rescue (ATR).

The E-Committee of the Supreme Court of India has released a manual for the “e-Courts Services Mobile app” in 14 languages which includes English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Khasi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu
This app aims to benefit litigants, citizens, lawyers, police and other governmental agencies.

As per the UN Charter, a Non-Self-Governing Territory is defined as a Territory ‘whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government’.
In 1963, the UNGA approved a revised list of 64 Territories and 54 Territories attained self-government from 1960 to 2002. At present, there are 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories across the world. The Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories is observed from May 25-31.

The Lakshadweep administration has announced to introduce Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation 2021 (LDAR) and the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) in the islands.
It has drawn criticism from across the country as LDAR gives powers to the administration to remove the small holding for property owned by the islanders belonging to the Scheduled Tribes. PASA gives powers to the administration to detain a person without any public disclosure for a period of up to one year.

Professor C.N.R. Rao, who is a Bharat Ratna recipient has been conferred with International Eni Award 2020. This has been awarded for his dedicated research in renewable energy sources and energy storage. This award is also known as the Energy Frontier award and is considered to be the Noble Prize in Energy Research.

For the first time in the history, Germany has recognised that it committed genocide against the people in present-day Namibia during its colonial rule over a century ago.
Between 1904 and 1908, German colonial settlers killed people from the Herero and Nama tribes after they rebelled against colonial rule. After five years of negotiations between the two countries, Germany promised financial support of over a billion euros to help the community projects in Namibia.

India holds the BRICS 2021 Chairship. It is the third time that India will be hosting the BRICS Summit after 2012 and 2016.
Recently, the second BRICS Sherpas’ and Sous Sherpas’ meeting was convened by India to prepare for the upcoming meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers. The theme of the Chairship is “BRICS @ 15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation with Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus”.
