Notes:
The Cabinet of Punjab Government has given an approval for the Punjab Prison Rules, 2021, under the provisions of Prison Act 1894. This new set of regulations would replace the existing Prison Rules which was last revised in the year 1996.
The Punjab Government is of the view that the existing prison rules are outdated and there is an immediate need to upgrade the regulations.

Notes:
Mucormycosis or “Black fungus” is an infection, which mainly affects people on medication. It reduces their ability to fight environmental pathogens.
This has been categorised as a notified disease in Haryana and the state has started to track the outbreak of this infection.

The tendency to continue to surf or scroll through bad news, even though that news is saddening or depressing, is termed by behavioural experts as “doom-scrolling” or “doomsday scrolling”.
This tendency may keep us updated and also help us mobilise resources at the same time it also nudges us towards an exaggerated sense of gloom and doom.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship Okeanos Explorer departed for a two-week expedition led by NOAA Ocean Exploration. NOAA is an American scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce.
The new class of submersible robot called Orpheus, will showcase a system to identify scientific features on the seafloor. This Terrain-relative navigation was used in NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Mars rover, for the precision touch down on the Mars.

UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) is a biennial global road safety campaign hosted by WHO in the month of May.
The theme for the 6th UNGRSW, which is to be held 17-23 May 2021, is Streets for Life #Love30. It calls for 30 km/h default speed limits to be imposed wherever people live, walk and play in all parts of the world.

Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito, when infected with a dengue virus. Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses.
National Dengue Day is observed in India on May 16 with the recommendation of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Brood X – or the Great Eastern Brood – is the group of cicadas that spread over the eastern USA. A cicada is an insect in the order Hemiptera (true bugs). They are similar to smaller jumping bugs such as leafhoppers and froghoppers.
During the 17-year-life cycle for the hordes of bugs, different broods emerge at different times. Brood X, otherwise known as the Great cicada hatching of 2021, is expected to occur in the last week of May and the first week of June in the USA.

The Government of India’s citizen engagement platform – MyGov has launched an innovation challenge, for developing an application on “Indian Language Learning”. The challenge has been launched in association with the Department of Higher Education.
The app is to be developed for an individual to learn simple sentences of any Indian language and acquire knowledge in a language.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has been providing Tele Counselling to children through the SAMVEDNA service, through a network of qualified medical professionals / Doctors.
SAMVEDNA stands for “Sensitizing Action on Mental Health Vulnerability through Emotional Development and Necessary Acceptance”. It is a tele counselling service for psychological support to children to address their stress and fear regarding COVID.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar along with Australia-based Monash University has developed a unique detector to find out if imposters are attending virtual conferences.
Named as ‘FakeBuster’, it helps to find faces manipulated on social media to defame. It also enables users to detect if a video of another person is spoofed during a video meet. This Deep fake detection tool works in both online and offline modes.
