Researchers have developed a tool called Diversity for Restoration (D4R), originally created by Bioversity International, to support agroforestry and ecosystem restoration efforts.
The tool has been further adapted by a team of researchers from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) in collaboration with Bioversity International to specifically cater to restoration programs in India.

The United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is taking place in New York from July 10 to 14.
The forum’s central theme revolves around “Accelerating the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the comprehensive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.”

The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojna- National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) has introduced the eSARAS mobile App, aimed at enhancing marketing assistance for products created by women belonging to Self-help Groups (SHGs).
This app will contribute to the existing eCommerce endeavors focused on promoting SHG-produced goods. DAY-NRLM is a flagship scheme of Ministry of Rural Development.

The 125th birth anniversary of Alluri Sitarama Raju was observed recently. Born on 4 July 1897 near Bhimavaram in Andhra Pradesh, he was an Indian revolutionary who led an armed campaign against the British colonial rule in India.
In August 1922, he launched what is now known as the Rampa Rebellion against the British.

Bird divorce is a phenomenon where certain birds opt to separate from their current partners and find new mates for future breeding seasons, even if their original partners are still alive.
A group of scientists from China and Germany have discovered two significant elements that play a role in divorce across various bird species: male promiscuity and long-distance migrations.

After over a hundred years, scientists have finally determined the cause behind the crimson-colored discharge known as Blood Falls from Taylor Glacier in Antarctica.
Through analyzing samples collected in 2006 and 2018, researchers discovered that the presence of iron-rich nanospheres is responsible for the striking red coloration.

A teenager in Kerala recently died after he contracted a rare brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri while swimming in a stream near his house.
Naegleria fowleri is a rare but extremely dangerous organism that can cause a fatal brain infection called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

The United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden and Ukraine have jointly launched a case against Iran at the United Nations’ International Court of Justice over the downing of a Ukrainian passenger jet in the year 2020, resulting in death of all 176 passengers and crew
The four countries want the International Court of Justice to rule that Iran illegally shot down the Ukraine International Airlines plane and to order the country to pay compensation to the families of the victims.

The seventh edition of the SALVEX exercise, which is a collaborative Salvage and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) drill between the Indian Navy and the US Navy took place recently in Kochi from June 26th to July 6th, 2023.
Since 2005, the Indian Navy (IN) and the US Navy (USN) have been engaging in joint Salvage and EOD exercises. This edition of the exercise witnessed the active involvement of both naval forces, with the participation of INS Nireekshak, USNS Salvor, as well as Specialist Diving and EOD teams.

Notes:
The Rajputana Rifles Regiment Band is accompanying the Indian contingent to the French National Day Parade. 14 July is celebrated as the Fête Nationale Française, or the National Day in France. It is also known as the Bastille Day.
The parade will witness a 269-member tri-services contingent of the Indian Armed Forces marching alongside their French counterparts.
