Notes:
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change recently published the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022.
New rules will replace Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001, to ensure environmentally sound management of waste batteries. The rules cover all types of batteries including Electric Vehicle batteries, portable batteries, automotive batteries and industrial batteries.

Notes:
Bharat Gas Resources Ltd (BGRL), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), has been amalgamated with the parent.
The order approving the amalgamation was issued by the Corporate Affairs Ministry. The scheme of amalgamation has become effective on August 16.

Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the United States annually on August 26. The day commemorates the decision to give women official voting right in the USA.
An amendment known as the Nineteenth Amendment was made to the US constitution in 1920 to give equal voting rights to women.

‘National Sports Day’ or Rashtriya Khel Divas is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey wizard of India.
It is an annual observance that falls on August 29 and it aims to create awareness about the need and benefits of incorporating sports and physical activities into our day to life. Major Dhyanchand played a key role in India’s gold medal victory at the Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Veer Balak Memorial’ in Anjar town of Kutch in the state of Gujarat.
It was opened in the memory of 185 school children and 20 teachers who were buried during the incident during the 2001 earthquake happened in Gujarat. He also inaugurated India’s first earthquake memorial ‘Smruti Van’ to commemorate more than 12,000 people who lost their lives in the 2001 earthquake.

The James Webb Space Telescope has spotted carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet in another solar system.
The finding marks the first detailed scientific result published from the new telescope. It also shows new possibilities of finding the same greenhouse gas in the atmospheres of smaller, rockier planets that are similar to the Earth.

Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen won his second badminton world title, beating Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the final in Tokyo.
World number-one Axelsen, who won Olympic gold last year, also claimed the world title in Glasgow in 2017. The 28-year-old has reached the final without losing a single game. This is also his sixth title of the season.

Union Minister for Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh unveiled a dedicated website to give further boost to the ongoing Coastal Clean-Up campaign.
The awareness campaign ‘Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar’ will culminate on ‘International Coastal Clean-up Day’. Dr. Singh also launched the campaign Logo-Vasuki, as a part of ongoing pan-India Coastal Clean-Up campaign.

Notes:
Pulikkali is a traditional street art form played in the state of Kerala. Ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Cochin Sakthan Thampuran introduced Pulikkali two centuries ago.
It is prominently played during the Onam celebrations in the state. The tiger-themed art form has people dressed like tigers roaming the streets in dance steps with drum beats.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated a month-long Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympic Games in Jodhpur.
The Village Olympics is expected to see the participation of 44,000 villages across Rajasthan and 30 lakh people. Out of the 30 lakh participants, 9 lakh are women. The Games include volleyball, hockey, tennis ball cricket and Kho Kho.
