INS Sumedha is an indigenously built Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel and is is part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam.
As part of the Indian Navy’s Long Range Deployment in the South Eastern Indian Ocean, INS Sumedha, is on a visit to Port Tanjung Benoa, Bali, en route to Perth, Australia, to coincide with India’s Independence Day. The ship undertook a Maritime Partnership Exercise the vessel of the Indonesian Navy.

The ‘National Handloom Day’ is observed on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced August 7 as National Handloom Day in the year 2015. The Government of India is implementing various schemes, like Handloom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare Scheme, the National Handloom Development Programme, the Yarn Supply scheme, and the Comprehensive Handloom Cluster Development scheme.

NITI Aayog member and scientist V. K. Saraswat suggested that the government should focus on setting up small modular reactors.
Small modular reactors (SMRs) are advanced nuclear reactors that have power capacity of up to 300 MW per unit. This would help meet India’s energy needs and in replacing the aging thermal power plants.

Rupal Chaudhary created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals at the World U20 Athletics Championship.
She clinched silver medal in the 4x400m relay as well as a bronze medal in the women’s 400m. Also known as the World Junior Championships, the event was held in Colombia.

Manisha Kalyan and Sunil Chhetri were named the AIFF Women’s and Men’s Footballer of the year respectively.
National captain Sunil Chhetri is the third highest goal scorer among active international players, was first named for the seventh time. Manisha had won the Women’s Emerging Footballer of the Year for last season.

Every year 9th August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, including their health needs.
The day was chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982. There are an estimated 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living across 90 countries.

The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar, laid the foundation stone of the Indo-Israel Center of Excellence for Vegetables in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh.
Chandauli district, which is known as the rice bowl of UP, is suitable for setting up the Center of Excellence for Vegetables due to its climatic conditions. There are 9 agro-climatic zones in the state favourable for cultivation of various horticultural crops throughout the year.

The Union Cabinet recently approved continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) till December, 2024.
The ‘Housing for All’ Mission was launched in June 2015. The original deadline for the scheme, which aimed at providing pucca houses to all eligible urban beneficiaries, was March 2022.

Papua New Guinea’s Parliament has elected Prime Minister James Marape to power after elections in the South Pacific Island nation.
Marape was sworn in as the Prime Minister for a second time. The contenders to lead the new government were Marape and Peter O’Neill, his predecessor who resigned in 2019. Papua New Guinea is a diverse tribal society, which gained independence from Australia in 1975.

Microsoft and the Indian government are set to collaborate for a programme to train 2.5 million civil servants in using Microsoft’s suite of digital tools.
The partnership between Microsoft, the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and the Capacity Building Commission (CBC) aims to help civil servants in helping the underprivileged.
