INS Sumedha is an indigenously built Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel and is is part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam.
As part of the Indian Navy’s Long Range Deployment in the South Eastern Indian Ocean, INS Sumedha, is on a visit to Port Tanjung Benoa, Bali, en route to Perth, Australia, to coincide with India’s Independence Day. The ship undertook a Maritime Partnership Exercise the vessel of the Indonesian Navy.

Notes:
The ‘Porcupine strategy’ (asymmetrical warfare) was adopted by Taiwan in 2017. Lee Hsi-Ming, then-chief of the Taiwanese military forces, called it as the “Overall Defence Concept” (ODC). It focuses on strengthening a weak state’s defences to exploit the enemy’s weaknesses rather than taking on its strengths.
China recently launched unprecedented military exercises near Taiwan after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island that Beijing claims as part of its territory.

The Central government moved the ‘The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre (Amendment) Bill, 2022’ in the Lok Sabha.
Law Minister Kiren Rijuu moved the Bill to amend the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Act, 2019. It seeks to rename the centre to ‘India International Arbitration Centre’, to give it a wider country-level scope instead of a city-level scope.

‘International Telecommunication Union’s Regional Standardization Forum for Asia and Oceania region’ is hosted by New Delhi.
Union Communications Ministry hosts the forum on the theme of ‘Regulatory and Policy aspects of Telecommunications’. Over 250 delegates from 20 countries will participate in the Forum.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert, from the Big Cat Initiative and National Geographic, founded the ‘World Lion Day’. In 2013, the first World Lion Day was observed on August 10.
The objective of the day is to safeguard lions in their natural environment and to collaborate on safety measures with localities that are close to wild cats. Lions are designated as a vulnerable species on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao launched the Nethanna Bima scheme for the weavers on the occasion of National Handloom Day.
This scheme will provide ₹5 lakh insurance cover to the weavers’ families in case of the unfortunate demise of an eligible beneficiary. Telangana government has partnered with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India for the ‘Nethanna Beema’ scheme.

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SIDBI for coordination of functions of related institutions.
Under the partnership, sessions to educate MSMEs about ONDC master-class sessions on ONDC protocol and Minimum Viable Product (MVP) will be held for MSMEs.

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) continues to be in the top position in the latest Nature Index 2022 ranking.
The Nature Index is an indicator of high-quality research in natural and physical sciences. The UoH has been ranked first among Indian Universities and 16th among all institutions in the academic sector. The rankings are based on the data from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launched India’s first Saline Water Lantern ‘Roshni’, during his visit to SAGAR ANVESHIKA, a Coastal Research Vessel.
The first-of-its kind lantern uses seawater as the electrolyte between specially designed electrodes to power the LED lamps.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that India has added 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites, bringing the country’s total count to 75.
Of the 11 new sites, four are in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two Jammu and Kashmir, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The 75 Ramsar sites cover an area of 1,326,677 ha in the country.
