Gustavo Petro, a former rebel fighter, has been sworn in as the first left-wing President of the South-American country Colombia.
Colombia’s first leftist President promised to fight inequality in the country hit by a long war between the government and guerrilla groups. He also promised to fight against inequality and climate change, and achieve peace with rebel groups and crime gangs.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens in southeast London agreed to transfer a collection of 72 items including Benin Bronzes to the Nigerian government.
The collection of Benin Bronzes looted in the late 19th century from the present day Nigeria are agreed to be returned as cultural institutions across Britain were under pressure to return artefacts acquired during the colonial era.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao launched the Nethanna Bima scheme for the weavers on the occasion of National Handloom Day.
This scheme will provide ₹5 lakh insurance cover to the weavers’ families in case of the unfortunate demise of an eligible beneficiary. Telangana government has partnered with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India for the ‘Nethanna Beema’ scheme.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the completion of an important milestone in Gaganyaan project by successfully test-firing the Low Altitude Escape Motor (LEM) of Crew Escape System (CES) from Sriharikota.
LEM is a distinctive special purpose solid rocket motor with four reverse flow nozzles. If the Gaganyaan mission has to be aborted during the initial phase of its space flight, CES takes away the Crew Module of Gaganyaan mission, thereby rescuing the astronauts.

Papua New Guinea’s Parliament has elected Prime Minister James Marape to power after elections in the South Pacific Island nation.
Marape was sworn in as the Prime Minister for a second time. The contenders to lead the new government were Marape and Peter O’Neill, his predecessor who resigned in 2019. Papua New Guinea is a diverse tribal society, which gained independence from Australia in 1975.

Notes:
The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), the home-grown howitzer gun, will be used for the ceremonial 21-gun salute during the Independence Day ceremony in New Delhi on 15 August, 2022, for the first time.
ATAGS, the indigenous gun, was designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The British guns are being traditionally fired until now.

Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has submitted data from Phase 3 clinical trials of BBV154, its intranasal Covid vaccine candidate, to the drug regulator.
It has sought approval both as a primary two-dose vaccine, and a heterologous booster shot. A heterologous booster means the third or subsequent dose of the vaccine is different from its primary dose.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the second phase of the Skill Development Training Program for women and youth in Banking, Financial Services & Insurance (BFSI) Sector.
In the second phase, 5000 youth from UT will be trained to introduce the employment opportunities in the Banking & Financial Services sector.

Researchers from Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IITH), in association with the LVPEI and CCMB, have developed a 3D-printed cornea from the human donor corneal tissue.
For the first time in India, the researchers 3D-printed an artificial cornea and transplanted it into rabbit eye. The product is completely natural, contains no synthetic components and is free of animal residues.

Notes:
The State Bank of India (SBI) will manage the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Bangladesh for two more years.
At present, SBI runs a total of 15 IVACs across Bangladesh and the first IVAC was started by SBI in 2005 in Dhaka. The agreement to extend the operations for two more years was signed recently.
