The Energy researcher will be the Secretary to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. She is the only fourth woman scientist to occupy the position of a Secretary of a scientific department under the central government.

Jharkhand Janjatiya Mahotsav is celebrated in the month of August. It includes participation of artists from tribal-dominated states, including the north-eastern states of India.
Artists across states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Mizoram and other tribal denominated states will also participate. The festival hosted by the state includes events like Tribal Fashion Shows, Tribal Food Festivals, and Handicraft Exhibitions among others.

As per a recent Parliament reply, scheduled commercial banks have written off loans worth about Rs 10 lakh crore in the last five financial years.
According to a reply by the Finance Ministry, during 2021-22, the write-off amount came down to Rs 1.57 lakh crore compared to Rs 2.02 lakh crore in 2020-21. The highest in five years was recorded in 2018-19 at Rs 2.36 Lakh crore.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert, from the Big Cat Initiative and National Geographic, founded the ‘World Lion Day’. In 2013, the first World Lion Day was observed on August 10.
The objective of the day is to safeguard lions in their natural environment and to collaborate on safety measures with localities that are close to wild cats. Lions are designated as a vulnerable species on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The London home of the Indian leader Dadabhai Naoroji is set to get a ‘Blue plaque’, an honour reserved for notable personalities who have lived and worked in London.
Dadabhai Naoroji is the first Asian to be elected a British Member of Parliament. The Blue Plaque scheme was established in 1866, and is run by English Heritage at present.

State of Bank of India has become the country’s first bank to launch a policy to fund industry of lab-grown diamonds.
India’s largest private lender released operational guidelines for financing man-made diamond houses including the standard prudential practices. Synthetic diamonds generally cost 30-40 per cent less than the natural diamonds.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that the North East India Festival will celebrate 75 years of India-Thailand relations.
The North East Festival ‘Connecting People celebrating Culture’ is the largest initiative of North East India. It will be held in Bangkok, to showcase the uniqueness of North East and promote unexplored avenues in terms of tourism and investment.

The first ‘Khelo India Women’s Hockey League for U-16 girls’ is scheduled to start on August 16 at the Major Dhyanchand Stadium in New Delhi.
The Khelo India Women’s Hockey League (U-21) was held over three phases in New Delhi and Lucknow earlier this year. A total of 16 teams across the country are participating and over 300 players will compete in the league.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launched India’s first Saline Water Lantern ‘Roshni’, during his visit to SAGAR ANVESHIKA, a Coastal Research Vessel.
The first-of-its kind lantern uses seawater as the electrolyte between specially designed electrodes to power the LED lamps.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that India has added 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites, bringing the country’s total count to 75.
Of the 11 new sites, four are in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two Jammu and Kashmir, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The 75 Ramsar sites cover an area of 1,326,677 ha in the country.
