Putin Pitches BRICS Grain Trade Platform

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a new insurance mechanism and a collaborative grain market among BRICS nations at the concluding session of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India, on 13 September 2026. The proposal was linked to wider economic cooperation among BRICS members and to trade arrangements for the Global South.

BRICS and Economic Cooperation

BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping of major emerging economies. Its members have discussed trade, finance, agriculture, and technology cooperation in summit meetings and ministerial forums.

  • BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • The grouping has expanded its agenda to include payment systems, supply chains, and food security.
  • BRICS countries account for about 42% of global agricultural and food output.
  • BRICS countries are home to more than two-thirds of the world’s small and marginal farmers.

Grain Trade and Insurance Mechanism

The proposed grain platform is intended to create a coordinated market for grain trade among BRICS members. The insurance mechanism is linked to shipping, commodity trade, and access to global insurance markets.

  • Russia had earlier introduced a framework for grain exchange at the BRICS trade ministers’ meeting in Jaipur in August 2026.
  • Insurance in international trade covers risks such as cargo loss, transport damage, and payment-related uncertainty.
  • Grain trade is a major part of agricultural commerce because wheat, maize, rice, and barley are globally traded staples.

New Development Bank and Sanctions Context

Putin referred to the New Development Bank, which is the multilateral development bank established by BRICS in 2014. He stated that the bank is handling projects worth $140 billion.

  • The New Development Bank was created by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • The bank finances infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies.
  • Western sanctions on Russia after the Ukraine conflict have affected Russian crude oil exports and access to global insurance.

Important Facts for Exams

  • BRICS was formed in 2009 as BRIC and became BRICS after South Africa joined in 2010.
  • The New Development Bank has its headquarters in Shanghai, China.
  • Global South is a term used for developing and emerging economies in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania.
  • Insurance mechanisms in trade are often linked with reinsurance, maritime transport, and commodity exchanges.

BRICS in Global Food Security
