NCRB Reports Rise in Juvenile Crime Cases
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recorded 34,878 cases against juveniles in 2024, compared with 31,365 cases in 2023. The juvenile crime rate increased from 7.1 in 2023 to 7.9 in 2024, and 42,633 juveniles were apprehended across India in connection with these cases.
Juvenile Justice Framework
The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, governs children in conflict with law and children in need of care and protection in India. The law classifies a child as any person below 18 years of age, and it provides separate procedures for inquiry, rehabilitation, and rehabilitation-based care.
Age Profile of Apprehended Juveniles
In 2024, 77.7% of apprehended juveniles belonged to the 16 to 18 years age group. This age group is relevant in criminal justice data because the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, allows a preliminary assessment in certain heinous offences committed by children in this bracket.
Crime Pattern in Metropolitan Areas
Delhi recorded 2,306 juvenile crime cases in 2024 among metropolitan cities. The city also registered 144 murder cases and 58 rape cases involving juveniles during the year.
