Miyawaki Method Adopted for Forest Plantation in Chhattisgarh’s Coal Belt

In a move to enhance forest cover in Chhattisgarh’s coal belt region, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, is set to implement the Miyawaki method for the first time in its operational areas. The Gevra Area of SECL will witness a two-hectare Miyawaki forest pilot project in collaboration with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crores.

Miyawaki Method

The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native trees, shrubs, and groundcover plants closely within every square meter. This technique, suitable for small parcels of land, creates a dense canopy layer of tall trees, enabling rapid green cover growth.

Pilot Project Details

The Gevra Area pilot project aims to plant about 20,000 saplings using the Miyawaki technique over a two-year period. The plantation will include various species such as Bargad, Peepal, Aam, Jamun (big plants), Karanj, Amla, Ashok (medium plants), and Kaner, Gudhal, Trikoma, Ber, Anjeer, Nimbu (small plants).

Benefits for Local Communities and Wildlife

The initiative is expected to increase green cover around the Gevra mine, the largest coal mine in India, benefiting local communities and wildlife. The indigenous species selected for the Miyawaki plantation require minimal maintenance, can withstand harsh weather and water-scarce conditions, and contribute to the rapid development of green cover.

Environmental Impact and Dust Regulation

SECL’s Miyawaki forest project is envisioned to play a crucial role in absorbing dust particles and regulating surface temperature. The initiative aligns with SECL’s commitment to environmental conservation and mitigating the impact of mining activities.

SECL’s Ongoing Green Initiatives

SECL, a leading coal-producing company in India, has been proactive in environmental initiatives. In FY 2023-24, the company has already brought 475 hectares of land under green cover and planted 10.77 lakh saplings, marking the highest among all Coal India subsidiaries. SECL has signed an MoU with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam for a comprehensive plantation and maintenance program at an estimated cost of Rs 169 crores over the next four years.
