Margaret Hamilton, Apollo Software Pioneer, Dies at 90

Margaret Hamilton, the computer scientist who led development of NASA’s Apollo flight software, died on 30 September 2026 at the age of 90. MIT published an obituary on 7 October 2026. Hamilton joined MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory in 1965, where the team developed onboard software for Apollo missions.

Apollo flight software

By 1968, Hamilton was assistant director responsible for the Command and Service Module software team, which included more than 400 people. The software was designed to detect and manage errors during missions. During the Apollo 11 lunar landing in July 1969, the onboard computer issued a 1202 alarm, signalling that it was overloaded. Priority-driven software suspended less essential background tasks and kept mission-critical operations running, allowing the landing sequence to continue.

Hamilton had proposed safeguards after her daughter accidentally activated a program on an Apollo simulator. Her initial recommendation was rejected, but changes were incorporated after a similar error occurred during Apollo 8. The Apollo software code was released in full on GitHub in 2015.

Software engineering

Hamilton is credited with coining the term “software engineering” and helping establish it as a distinct discipline. Her work included methods for reliability, error prevention and systems engineering. She later founded Higher Order Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986, and authored more than 130 publications.

Awards and recognition

Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2016. Other honours included the NASA Exceptional Space Act Award, the Computer History Museum Fellow Award and induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. She was also represented as a LEGO minifigure in 2017.

Important Facts for Exams

:
