Kerala Reports Fresh Nipah Virus Case

Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus that can spread from animals to humans and can also transmit through close human contact. Kerala recorded a preliminary positive Nipah virus test in a 40-year-old man from Kozhikode on 10 June 2026, and the patient is receiving treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on ventilator support.

Nipah Virus: Basic Facts

Nipah virus belongs to the genus Henipavirus and the family Paramyxoviridae. Fruit bats of the family Pteropodidae are recognised natural hosts for the virus, and outbreaks have been documented in South and South-East Asia.

Samples from the patient have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, for final confirmation. A preliminary test can indicate infection, while confirmatory testing is used for laboratory validation in a reference facility.
