India Wins Four Medals at International Linguistics Olympiad 2026

India won one gold medal, three bronze medals, and one Honourable Mention at the 23rd International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) held in Bucharest, Romania, in 2026. The eight-member Indian student contingent competed in the individual contest, where medals were awarded for solving language-analysis problems based on logic, grammar, and pattern recognition.

International Linguistics Olympiad

The International Linguistics Olympiad is an annual academic competition for secondary school students. It tests analytical skills through problems in phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, and language comparison.

The 23rd edition of the IOL was held in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. The contest included 255 individual competitors from more than 40 countries.

Indian Performance at IOL 2026

Indian student Shrilakshmi Venkatraman won the individual gold medal with a score of 70.0. Aarav Anil Rao, Nishanth Shankar Lakshmanan, and Advay Misra won bronze medals, while Soham Amit Pednekar received an Honourable Mention.

India’s cumulative medal tally at the IOL since its first participation in 2009 reached 37 individual medals, including 6 gold, 9 silver, and 22 bronze medals.

Selection and Training Process

The Indian team was selected through the Panini Linguistics Olympiad (PLO), which is the national qualifying contest for the IOL. The Open National Qualifying contest was held on 15 February 2026, and 338 of the 525 registered students appeared in the first round.

The Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) of the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) has managed the mentorship programme since 2015. IIIT-H hosted a 10-day residential training camp from 31 May to 10 June 2026 for 34 top qualifiers before selecting the final eight-member team.
