India Moves Towards French-Led Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Programme

India has begun concerted efforts to join the French-led Future Combat Air System, a sixth-generation fighter aircraft programme, in 2026. The development comes alongside India’s fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, which remains in its design phase, and wider discussions on advanced combat aviation partnerships.

Future Combat Air System and Sixth-Generation Fighters

The Future Combat Air System, commonly abbreviated as FCAS, is a multinational defence programme led by France and Germany. Sixth-generation fighter aircraft are a class of combat aircraft expected to include advanced stealth, sensor fusion, networked operations, artificial intelligence support, and unmanned teaming features.

Two major global consortia are currently associated with sixth-generation fighter development. The Global Combat Air Programme involves the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, while FCAS involves France and Germany.

India’s Combat Aircraft Programme

India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, or AMCA, is the country’s indigenous fifth-generation fighter aircraft project. The AMCA is being developed as a stealth multirole fighter under the Aeronautical Development Agency and the Defence Research and Development Organisation framework.

The Indian Air Force has also examined collaboration with a foreign sixth-generation consortium to maintain access to advanced air combat technologies. India has continued to prioritise the upgrade of its Su-30MKI fleet, which forms a major part of the Indian Air Force inventory.

Parliamentary and Policy Context

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence of the 18th Lok Sabha tabled its 25th Action Taken Report on 7 August 2026. The committee welcomed the initial steps taken by the Ministry of Defence and asked for a clear status roadmap for the sixth-generation aircraft initiative.

The committee also recommended a defined trajectory for planning, acquisition, and development of 6G aircraft. Such parliamentary reports are part of the oversight mechanism under the Indian Parliament’s committee system.
