India-Brazil Agritech Collaboration

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) launched the second edition of the Brazil–India Cross-Incubation Programme in Agritech, known as Maitri 2.0, in New Delhi. This initiative aims to strengthen innovation and cooperation between Indian and Brazilian agritech sectors. It marks step in the 77-year agricultural partnership between the two nations. The programme focuses on co-creation, knowledge exchange, and building resilient food systems.
Historical Agricultural Partnership
India and Brazil have shared a long-standing agricultural relationship spanning over seven decades. Both countries collaborate on global platforms like BRICS and the G20. The recent MoU between ICAR and EMBRAPA, Brazil’s leading agricultural research institution, marks a milestone in bilateral cooperation. This partnership covers the entire agri-food value chain.
ICAR’s Innovation Growth
ICAR has transformed its innovation output dramatically. From producing 74 patents in 1996, it now generates over 1,800 patents annually. This growth is supported by multiple incubation centres and more than 5,000 licensing agreements. The focus remains on delivering publicly funded innovations directly to farmers and end-users to boost agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Maitri 2.0 Objectives
Maitri 2.0 serves as a two-way learning platform for Indian and Brazilian agritech ecosystems. It aims to strengthen incubator linkages, promote co-incubation, and share best practices. The programme opens new opportunities in digital agriculture, value-chain development, and sustainable farming techniques. It targets climate resilience and food and nutritional security challenges faced by both countries.
Role of Startups and Innovation
Over 400 agri-startups in India have been supported to turn ideas into viable business models. The programme emphasises viewing agriculture as both a livelihood and a business. Startups and innovators from both countries are encouraged to collaborate, bringing fresh technologies and solutions to the agricultural sector. This collaboration aims to empower farmers and improve food system resilience.
Strategic Importance and Future Prospects
The initiative reflects the broader strategic partnership between India and Brazil. It aligns with shared goals of encouraging innovation and sustainable agricultural development. By combining strengths, the programme aims to address global challenges such as climate change and food security. The partnership is expected to enhance agricultural productivity, promote technological advancement, and ensure nutritional security for millions.
