Google Maps Renames Gulf of Mexico in US View

The Gulf of Mexico is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean bordered by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. In January 2025, an executive order in the United States directed the Geographic Names Information System to use the name “Gulf of America” in official U.S. listings, and Google Maps later applied the label for users inside the United States.

Geographical Naming and Jurisdiction

Geographical names are standardised through national naming authorities and international cartographic practices. The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and naming practices on digital maps can vary by country, language setting, and local legal requirements.

Google Maps used geo-restricted display rules for the gulf name. Users in the United States saw “Gulf of America”, users in Mexico saw “Gulf of Mexico”, and users in other regions saw both names.

Digital Mapping Platforms

Google Maps and Apple Maps are major digital mapping services used for navigation, place search, and geographic labelling. Apple Maps also updated its U.S. display to show “Gulf of America” on 11 February 2025.

Digital map labels often depend on government place-name databases, regional policy settings, and platform-specific editorial rules. The Geographic Names Information System is the federal repository for official geographic names in the United States.

Mexico’s Position and Legal Action

Mexico objected to the renaming of the entire gulf and stated that the United States does not control the full water body. Mexico controls 49% of the gulf, the United States controls 46%, and Cuba controls 5% of the coastline and adjoining waters.

On 9 May 2025, the Mexican government filed a lawsuit against Google in the Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City. The case concerned the use of the “Gulf of America” label beyond waters under direct U.S. jurisdiction.
