CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative Strengthens India’s Skilled Workforce

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is implementing the CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative, a flagship national programme designed to strengthen India’s skilled workforce by bridging the gap between scientific research, industry requirements and employable skills. Aligned with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India, the initiative integrates skill development with science and technology by leveraging CSIR’s vast research infrastructure and nationwide laboratory network.

Objectives and National Alignment

The initiative focuses on aligning skill training with real-world industrial, societal and entrepreneurial needs. By embedding skill development within scientific research ecosystems, the programme aims to create a talent pool that is not only technically proficient but also industry-ready. It supports national priorities of self-reliance, innovation-led growth and enhanced employability across sectors.

Inclusive Beneficiaries and Training Modules

According to an official release, the programme provides inclusive access to a wide range of beneficiaries. These include students, young researchers, technical staff and working professionals, as well as school dropouts, ITI diploma holders, farmers and rural communities. Skill development is delivered through structured short-term and long-term modules such as training programmes, internships, certification courses and hands-on laboratory exposure.

Sectoral Coverage and Skill Outcomes

The CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative currently covers 18 out of the 36 key sectoral skills identified under the National Skill Development Mission. These span diverse areas including aerospace and aviation, agriculture, automotive, construction, electronics, food processing, green jobs, healthcare, life sciences, textiles, IT and ITeS. The emphasis is on combining strong theoretical foundations with practical competencies to support employment, entrepreneurship and long-term career growth.

Progress, Phase III and Institutional Support

CSIR stated that over 1.90 lakh individuals have been trained through more than 5,200 skill-based programmes under Phase I and Phase II, including focused efforts for rural citizens and women. Phase III of the initiative was launched in June 2025 by N Kalaiselvi, Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Secretary, DSIR. In its first year, Phase III has already trained over 14,000 participants through more than 425 programmes conducted across 37 CSIR laboratories. The CSIR-Human Resource Development Centre serves as the nodal office, ensuring coordination, monitoring and impact evaluation, with a continued focus on quality, relevance and national development.
