- Environment (Protection) Act, 1986: Acts as the umbrella law for biosafety regulations across the country.
- Rules 1989: Formally titled “Rules for the Manufacture, Use, Import, Export and Storage of Hazardous Micro-organisms/Genetically Engineered Organisms or Cells, 1989”, these rules were notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. They govern research, large-scale handling, environmental release, and commercial use of genetically engineered organisms.
- Biological Diversity Act, 2002: Regulates access to biological resources and ensures fair sharing of benefits arising from their commercial use.
