Yoga for Healthy Ageing Theme Announced for IDY 2026

The Ministry of Ayush has announced “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” as the theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, which will be observed on 21 June 2026. The main IDY celebration for 2026 will be held in Kolkata, and the ministry has linked the theme with year-round yoga practice through the “Yoga 365” initiative.

International Day of Yoga

The United Nations General Assembly declared 21 June as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. The first International Day of Yoga was observed on 21 June 2015, and the day is marked annually in India and several other countries.

Yoga for Healthy Ageing

“Yoga for Healthy Ageing” is the theme selected for IDY 2026 by the Ministry of Ayush. The theme is associated with healthy ageing, active living, and dignified life in older age groups. The ministry has also referred to yoga as a cost-effective practice for balance, flexibility, strength, respiratory efficiency, cardiovascular health, and mental well-being.

Campaign and Outreach Activities

On 8 June 2026, the Ministry of Ayush organised an RJ and Influencer Meet at Ayush Bhawan in New Delhi to involve media professionals and digital influencers in the campaign. On 7 June 2026, Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav referred to the theme during public outreach for IDY 2026. On 4 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked athletes at the inaugural World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad to support the “Yoga 365” campaign.

Ayush Ministry Initiatives

The Ministry of Ayush has launched “10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases and Target Groups”, including a dedicated protocol for elderly persons. The “Yoga 365” initiative promotes daily yoga practice throughout the year rather than only on 21 June.
