The Japanese scientist, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi has won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy, a fundamental process for degrading and recycling cellular components. Dr Ohsumi’s work is important because it helps to explain what goes wrong in a range of illnesses, from cancer to Parkinson’s. The prize was awarded by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
