The Sturisoma genus of fish has recently welcomed a new member to its diverse family. Researchers have identified and described a species called Sturisoma reisi, adding to the rich biodiversity found in the Madeira River basin in Bolivia and Brazil. Sturisoma reisi is known to inhabit various rivers within the Madeira River basin. Researchers have documented its presence in Cautário, Itenéz, Guaporé, Mamoré, Machado, and Soteiro rivers. The species has been found in a total of 18 localities, with 17 in Brazilian territory and one in Bolivian territory. Its extent of occurrence spans nearly 200,000 square kilometers, reflecting its wide distribution within the region.

Conservation Status

Following the recommendations of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sturisoma reisi has been categorized as “Least Concern.” This classification indicates that the species does not currently face a significant risk of extinction. However, it underscores the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts to preserve the biodiversity of the region.
