What is Sturisoma reisi?

The Sturisoma genus of fish has recently welcomed a new member to its diverse family. Researchers have identified and described a species called Sturisoma reisi, adding to the rich biodiversity found in the Madeira River basin in Bolivia and Brazil. This discovery sheds light on the fascinating world of freshwater armored catfishes and highlights the need for further research and conservation efforts.

Exploring Sturisoma Reisi

Sturisoma reisi, the newly described species, possesses distinct characteristics that set it apart from other congeners. It showcases a middorsal longitudinal dark stripe on the caudal peduncle, along with smaller anterior abdominal plates. Additionally, a dark brown stripe extends from the first predorsal plate to near the dorsal-fin origin. These unique features contribute to the identification and differentiation of Sturisoma reisi.

Distribution and Habitat

Sturisoma reisi is known to inhabit various rivers within the Madeira River basin. Researchers have documented its presence in Cautário, Itenéz, Guaporé, Mamoré, Machado, and Soteiro rivers. The species has been found in a total of 18 localities, with 17 in Brazilian territory and one in Bolivian territory. Its extent of occurrence spans nearly 200,000 square kilometers, reflecting its wide distribution within the region.

Conservation Status

Following the recommendations of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sturisoma reisi has been categorized as “Least Concern.” This classification indicates that the species does not currently face a significant risk of extinction. However, it underscores the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts to preserve the biodiversity of the region.
