Several foreigners made India their homeland and participated in various movements. Analyse their role in the Indian struggle for freedom. (UPSC 2013)

Several foreigners adopted India as their home and strengthened the freedom struggle through organisation, publicity and moral support, widening its social base and international reach.

  • Political mobilisation: Annie Besant led the Home Rule League and energised constitutional politics; Nellie Sengupta later headed the Congress under repression.
  • Mass awakening and reform: Sister Nivedita supported Swadeshi, girls’ education and revolutionary circles; C.F. Andrews defended indentured labourers and linked India with its diaspora.
  • Grassroots and ethical support: Samuel Evans Stokes joined Non-Cooperation and opposed begar in Himachal; Benjamin Guy Horniman exposed colonial atrocities like Jallianwala Bagh; Mirabehn and Sarla Behn linked nationalism with rural uplift and environmental care.

Thus, these foreigners acted not as mere sympathisers but as active participants, giving the nationalist movement wider legitimacy, moral force and global visibility.
