Discuss the contribution of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad to pre- and post-independent India. (UPSC 2013)

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a nationalist thinker, scholar and journalist who combined Islamic learning with a secular, inclusive vision and championed Hindu-Muslim unity.

• Pre-independence: Through Al-Hilal and Al-Balagh, he stirred political awareness and attacked colonial rule. He supported the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation movements, opposed the Two-Nation Theory, took part in Salt Satyagraha, Dharasana and Quit India, and as Congress President helped sustain the party’s anti-partition stand.
• Post-independence: As India’s first Education Minister, he laid the foundation of modern education by promoting free and compulsory primary schooling, adult literacy, technical education, IITs, UGC and cultural bodies such as ICCR and the national academies.

Azad linked freedom with education, secularism and nation-building, making him a key architect of modern India.
