Tussle between Tamil Nadu Governor and CM Escalates in Assembly

The relationship between the Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Chief Minister of the state has been fraught with tension in recent times, but things came to a head recently when the Governor walked out of the assembly in a huff. The cause of the altercation was a disagreement over a speech that had been given by the Governor, which led to the Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, tabling a resolution against him.

Governor-Government Tussle

The Governor, R.N. Ravi, and the Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, have been locked in a tussle for some time now. This came to a head on Monday when the Governor delivered a speech in the assembly, which had been “approved” by the Chief Minister, but which Stalin felt was not fully read or appropriately presented. Stalin then quickly drafted a resolution, which he tabled, in response to the Governor’s speech, and the Assembly subsequently adopted the resolution that had been put to voice vote by Speaker M Appavu. Stalin said the draft of the speech sent to Raj Bhavan a few days prior to the scheduled address had been cleared by him and subsequently printed and made available to all MLAs on the tablets placed on their desks, besides hard copies on request.

Protest against Governor

The Governor’s walkout from the assembly prompted shouts of “Vazhga Tamil Nadu (Long live Tamil Nadu)” from the treasury benches. This led to a rising tide of protests across the state, with slogans of ‘GetOutRavi’ trending on Twitter and posters demanding the same seen across the state. DMK cadres, on Monday night, protested against the governor by burning his posters at Sulur, while Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam cadres burnt his effigy in Chennai and Coimbatore.

The altercation in the assembly on Monday and the subsequent protests demonstrate the high level of tension that exists between the Governor and Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu. The resolution adopted by the Assembly and the Governor’s walkout have added fuel to the fire, and it remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved. The relationship between the Governor and Chief Minister is important for the smooth functioning of the state, and it is crucial that both sides work towards resolving their differences for the benefit of the state and its people.
