QS World University Rankings 2022

QS World University Rankings 2022 was released recently, in which Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has become the highest ranked Indian Institute. Rank of IISc Bengaluru has improved by 31 places.

Rank of Indian Universities or Institutes

  • Among the Indian institute, IIT-Bombay has been ranked second while IIT-Delhi has been ranked third.
  • Overall, IISc has been ranked 155th, IIT Bombay at 172nd and IIT-Delhi at 174th.
  • No other Indian institutes has been ranked in top 200.
  • Total number of Indian institutes among top 1,000 worldwide has increased from 22 to 27.
  • IIT-Indore became the highest-ranking debut in the list and secured the 396th position worldwide.
  • IIT-BHU made its appearance in 651-700 band.
  • Apart from IISc, eight IITs namely, Delhi, Madras, Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati, Roorkee, and Indore have been ranked among top 500 worldwide.

Remarkable increase in IISc’s ranking

Rank of IISc has increased significantly. It is one among the eight public Institutes of Eminence (IoE), that showed improvement across four out of six parameters. In the Citations per Faculty, IISc remains at the top. On this parameter, even world leader has not changed much. It is also the world’s top research university, and received a score of 100/100 for this metric. It also emerged as the fastest rising South Asian university among QS World University Rankings top-200.

Parameters deciding the ranking

Universities or Institutions are ranked on the basis of 6 parameters:

  1. Academic reputation (AR),
  2. Employer reputation (ER),
  3. Faculty-student ratio (FSR),
  4. Citations per faculty (CpF),
  5. International faculty ratio and
  6. International students’ ratio.

Best Global University

  • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has become the best university this year and for the 11th consecutive year.
  • It is followed by University of Cambridge, and Stanford University.
  • China’s 28 universities have been ranked among top 500, including six in top 100.
  • China’s Peking University has been ranked 12 while Tsinghua University has been ranked 14th.
