Tiyuni-Plasu hydropower project receives final forest clearance

UJVN Limited’s 72-megawatt Tiyuni-Plasu hydropower project received final forest clearance from the central government on 30 October 2026. The project is proposed on the Tons River in Tyuni tehsil of Dehradun district, Uttarakhand.

Project capacity and next steps

Once completed, the project is estimated to generate about 29.85 crore units of electricity annually. The clearance allows UJVN Limited to advance construction-related work, but construction can begin only after the remaining statutory and technical processes are completed.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Power determinants: Hydropower output depends on both hydraulic head—the energy per unit weight of water—and the volumetric flow rate.
  • Run-of-river design: Run-of-river plants rely on continuous water flow and have less capacity to supply electricity on demand than reservoir-based plants.
  • Separate statutory approvals: Under India’s forest-conservation law, approval to divert forest land is a separate statutory process from environmental clearance under the EIA Notification.
  • Two-stage forest approval: Forest-diversion cases are processed in two stages: Stage-I grants in-principle approval, while Stage-II follows fulfilment of conditions for final approval.
