Tiger Reserves of India [2024]

A tiger reserve refers to a designated protected area that aims to provide safe habitats for tigers and conserve India’s tiger population. Tiger reserves are established under India’s Project Tiger initiative, launched in 1973 to protect the endangered tiger. Each reserve has a core area (critical tiger habitat) that is kept as inviolate. This is surrounded by a buffer area with co-existence of both wildlife and regulated human activities.

  • Activities like grazing, woodcutting and collection of forest produce is regulated and rights of forest dwellers are protected in buffer areas around core tiger habitats.
  • Besides ecological preservation, tiger reserves also focus on wild tiger populations, ensuring viable breeding populations through conservation breeding programs.
  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and Project Tiger oversee India’s tiger reserves and coordinate tiger conservation efforts with state governments.

Number of Tiger Reserves in India

As of 2024, India has 55 tiger reserves across 18 states. The reserves cover around 75,000 sq km, which is nearly 2.21% of India’s geographical area. Tiger reserves encompass diverse habitats – from tropical and subtropical forests to wetlands and savannas – supporting not just tigers but numerous other endangered species.
