Swachhata Hi Seva 2025

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Jal Shakti recently held a joint meeting to prepare for Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025. The campaign will run from 17th September to 2nd October 2025. The theme Swachhotsav aligns with the Indian festive season to promote clean and green celebrations. This initiative encourages citizens and authorities alike to maintain cleanliness as a continuous effort.
Background
- Swachhata Hi Seva is an annual campaign promoting sanitation and cleanliness across India.
- It builds on the legacy of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched in 2014.
- The 2025 edition focuses on integrating cultural festivities with environmental care.
Campaign Theme – Swachhotsav
Swachhotsav marks celebrating cleanliness as a way of life. It aims to merge festive joy with environmental responsibility. The campaign encourages night-long cleanliness drives post celebrations. It seeks to transform sanitation from a task into a cultural movement, encouraging pride in clean surroundings during festivals.
Roles of Ministries and States
Both ministries co-chair the campaign, coordinating urban and rural sanitation efforts. States and UTs are urged to map Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) and tackle legacy dumpsites completely. Officials from urban local bodies and rural departments collaborate to ensure effective implementation. The use of the Swachhata App is promoted for citizen engagement and rapid grievance redressal.
Community and Women’s Participation
Women’s leadership in sanitation is a key focus. The previous Swachhotsav campaign was women-led, celebrating their role in urban cleanliness. Initiatives like the Women Icons Leading Swachhata (WINS) Awards recognise women entrepreneurs in sanitation. The Swachhata Yatra project offers peer learning opportunities for women Self-Help Group members working as waste entrepreneurs.
Integration with National and Global Goals
The campaign aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of Garbage Free Cities and the LiFE (Lifestyle for the Environment) movement. LiFE promotes mindful consumption to protect the environment. SHS 2025 supports Sustainable Development Goals by encouraging behavioural change towards sanitation and waste management.
