Sharm El-Sheikh Summit Seeks Gaza Peace

The Sharm El-Sheikh Gaza Peace Summit in 2025 marks important step in addressing the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Following a ceasefire brokered last year, the summit gathers over 20 world leaders to discuss peace, stability, and humanitarian efforts in the Middle East. India’s participation through Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh marks its diplomatic engagement in West Asia.

Background of the Gaza Conflict

The conflict reignited on 7 October 2023 when Hamas launched an incursion into Israel. This attack led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the capture of 251 hostages. The ensuing war caused over 67,000 deaths, mainly Palestinians, and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis. The violence drew widespread global condemnation and calls for peace.

Ceasefire and Diplomatic Mediation

A ceasefire was brokered in late 2024 through indirect talks hosted in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. These talks were mediated by the United States and supported by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. The agreement included a hostage swap – Hamas would release hostages while Israel would free around 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees. The deal also promised eased restrictions and expanded humanitarian access to Gaza.

Summit Objectives and Participants

The summit aims to end the Gaza war, promote peace and stability, and initiate regional security measures. It is jointly chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Confirmed attendees include the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Spain’s Pedro Sánchez, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attendance remains uncertain. Hamas has declined to participate.

India’s Role and Diplomatic Strategy

India is represented by Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh rather than Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This decision signals India’s desire to maintain diplomatic relevance without full-scale commitment. India aims to contribute to post-war reconstruction and humanitarian frameworks in Gaza. This approach reflects India’s broader West Asia policy of balanced engagement and peace promotion.

Humanitarian and Regional Impact

The summit focuses on addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including access to medical aid, food, and infrastructure rebuilding. Regional security is a key concern, as the conflict has destabilised neighbouring countries. The summit seeks to create mechanisms for lasting peace and prevent future escalations.
