Nun and missionary Mother Teresa, known in the Catholic church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, devoted her life to caring for the sick and poor. In 2003, Mother Teresa was beatified
as ‘Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’. She was fluent in five languages i.e. Bengali,
Albanian, Serbian, English and Hindi.

Notes:
Mother Teresa (aka St Teresa) founded the Home of the Pure Heart (Nirmal Hriday) at Kalighat in
1952, which is a home for the sick, destitute and dying. She died on 5th
September, 1997 in Kolkata.

Amartya Sen won the Nobel Prize
for Economics in 1998 for his
contributions to welfare economics. He
was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1999.

Chittaranjan Das founded the Swaraj Party with veteran Motilal Nehru and the young
Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, to
express his uncompromising opinions. He died on 16th June, 1925.

Meghnad Saha was a professor at Allahabad University
from 1923 to 1938 and thereafter, a
professor and Dean of the Faculty of
Science at the University of Calcutta. In 1927 when he was only 34, the Fellowship of the Royal Society was awarded to him. He
died on 16th February, 1956.

Ganga Kishore Bhattacharya was the first Bengali Publisher in Bengal. Bengal, especially Kolkata was the cradle of journalism in India. The year 1818 marks the beginning of Bengali journalism. Samachar Darpan, is regarded as the first newspaper in Bengali language. But prior to that, Ganga Kishore Bhattacharya started publishing the Bengali weekly, Bengal Gazetti or Vangal Gazette.

In Chhokra Dance form, the story of Radha and Krishna is a popular theme. This dance is mainly performed in
Murshidabad and Malda region of West Bengal. The musicians seat themselves on the sides of the stage and provide the music for the songs and dance. Others stay in
the dressing room and wait for their cue.

Kirtan Dance is one of the most commonly performed dance forms of West Bengal. The dance is devoted to the worship of Lord Vishnu. The dance was given a proper and unique form by a very famous religious revivalist ‘Chaitanya Deva’. The most important
characteristic of this dance is that it is performed by the members of whole village
without any distinction on the basis of caste, class and religion. The instruments like dhol and drum are used generally while the dance is performed.

Pramathesh Barua was born in 1903. He was an India actor, director and screen
writer of Indian films in the pre-independence era. Son of the Zamindar of Gauripur
Assam, he was very close to Rabindranath Tagore. He received training in
cinematography in Paris and setup Barua Film Unit and Barua Studio in his own
residence in Calcutta. He made and produced some films. He joined New Theatres
and directed films. In 1935 his portrayal in Devdas written by Sarat Chandra
Chattopadhyay made him a legend, Barua followed up Devdas with Manzil in 1936,
Mukti in 1937, Adhikan in 1938, Rajat Jayanti in 1940. He introduced many new
techniques like artificial lights, new makeup process, ‘cut-shot’ technique in Indian
movie. He died in 1951.

Nazrul Manch is an open air theatre located in Sarat Bose Road, Kolkata. It was set up in 1980 and has been one of the largest air conditioned auditoriums of the city, maintained by KMDA. It was renovated in
2013. It is the venue for the famous Dover Lane Music Conference in January every
year. It is the most preferred location for musical concerts in Kolkata.
