Pramathesh Barua was born in 1903. He was an India actor, director and screen
writer of Indian films in the pre-independence era. Son of the Zamindar of Gauripur
Assam, he was very close to Rabindranath Tagore. He received training in
cinematography in Paris and setup Barua Film Unit and Barua Studio in his own
residence in Calcutta. He made and produced some films. He joined New Theatres
and directed films. In 1935 his portrayal in Devdas written by Sarat Chandra
Chattopadhyay made him a legend, Barua followed up Devdas with Manzil in 1936,
Mukti in 1937, Adhikan in 1938, Rajat Jayanti in 1940. He introduced many new
techniques like artificial lights, new makeup process, ‘cut-shot’ technique in Indian
movie. He died in 1951.
