Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha has been honoured with the 2017 Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema. She received the award from UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon at the Vaisakhi Dinner organised by the British Sikh Association at the Lancaster Hotel on March 24, 2017. Her noted films include “Bhaji on the Beach”, “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Bride and Prejudice”. Chadha’s latest film, “Viceroy’s House” tells the true story of the final five months of British rule in India and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.

Sebastian Vettel, a German racing driver, has won the 2017 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Australia.

Recently, Purva Barve from India has won the Under-19 Women’s Singles Li Ning-Israel Open badminton tournament 2017 by defeating Lela Minadze of Russia by 21-6, 21-4 at the Sports Hall, Rishon LeZion in Israel. Apart from this, Varun Kapur from India has also won theUnder-15 Boys Singles tournament by defeating Toby Dillingham of England in the final by 21-10, 21-2.

Sumitra Mahajan, the Lok Sabha Speaker, will lead Indian Parliamentary delegation in the 136th Assembly Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) 2017 at Dhaka, Bangladesh from April 1 to 5, 2017. The IPU Assembly is the principal statutory body that expresses the views of the IPU on political issues. It brings together parliamentarians to study international problems and make recommendations for action. The next 137th IPU Assembly will be held at St. Petersburg in Russian Federation from October 14 to 18, 2017.

El Salvador, Central America’s smallest nation, has become the world’s first country to ban metals mining nationwide following a long-running dispute with a Canadian-Australian company over an environmentally questioned gold project. For this, El Salvador passed a law that prohibits all metal mining in an attempt to protect the environment and natural resources.

India forward SV Sunil has been named the Asian Player of the Year 2016 in the senior men’s category by the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF). SV Sunil played a vital role in team India’s successful outing at 2016 FIH Champions Trophy in London where he led the forwardline and was instrumental in the team’s historic Silver medal winning performance. Apart from him, Harmanpreet Singh has been named the ‘Promising Player of the Year 2016’ in the junior men’s category.

India’s first-ever Blind Football Academy (BFA) with full time training & rehabilitation for the visually impaired persons is expected to come up at Kochi in Kerala. The Society for Rehabilitation of Visually Challenged (SRVC) and the Indian Blind Federation (IBFF) are making an effort to establish the academy. The purpose to set up BFA is to train and develop the best players to create a national team of world class standard and to qualify for the Paralympics by 2024.

The Aymanam grama panchayat of ward No. 15 in Kerala has become the India’s first-ever digitised Panchayat ward. For this, Krishan Pal Gurjar (the Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment) has launched the website of the first digitalized panchayat ward number 15 of Aymanam grama panchayat “www.digitalaymanam.com” at a function held at a temple premises in Kottayam district. The website also contains information about blood donors’ forum and telephone directory of the people of the ward.

The National Anti-Child Labour Day is observed every year in India on April 30 to create awareness and educate the citizens about the hardships of the child labourers. It is also an effort to surface the responsibility we hold as social citizens. Apart from this, the International Labour Organization (ILO) also observes World Day against Child Labour every year on June 12 to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour worldwide.

Dr. Sanjay Pratihar, a scientist at Tezpur University, has been chosen for the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) medal for the Young Scientist Award for the year 2017 for his excellent contribution to multi-metal complexes, theoretical understanding, selective sensing of Hq2+ions and important applications in agriculture. The award, which consists of a bronze medal, a certificate and cash award of Rs. 25,000, will be given to him during INSA’s anniversary meeting scheduled in December 2017. The award of an Academy medal to a Young Scientist shall be made in recognition of notable contributions to any branch of science or technology, recognised by the Academy, on the basis of work carried out in India.
