The Department of Consumer Affairs recently organised a one-day ‘National Workshop on Legal Metrology Act, 2009’.
The Act was passed to establish and enforce standards of weights and measures, regulate trade and commerce in weights, measures and other related goods. Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal said that there is a need for decriminalisation of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

India has contributed USD 800,000 towards efforts to continue to expand the use of Hindi in the United Nations.
‘Hindi @ UN’ project, in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information, was launched in 2018 with an aim to enhance the public outreach of the United Nations in Hindi language. It also aims to spread greater awareness about global issues among Hindi-speaking people of the world.

Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Shri Parshottam Rupala released the Breed-Wise Report of Livestock and Poultry based on 20th Livestock Census. For the first time, breed wise data was collected by using tablet computers.
As per the report, the Exotic and Crossbred animal contribute 26.5% of the total cattle population whereas 73.5% are Indigenous and Non-descript cattle. Crossbred Jersey has the highest share in Exotic/Crossbred cattle. Gir, Lakhimi and Sahiwal breeds are highest in Indigenous Cattle. In Buffalo, the Murrah breed contributes 42.8%. They are commonly found in UP and Rajasthan.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn-in as Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
His predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned following violent protests over the worst economic crisis. Wickremesinghe has previously served as the country’s Prime Minister for four times. Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.

As per the study of the India Council for Medical Research under the India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI), nearly 23% out of 2.1 million Indians have uncontrolled blood pressure.
27% did not return for follow up in the first quarter of 2021, as per the study. Only 10% of the patients surveyed have their blood pressure under control. The study enrolled over 20 lakh patients across 19 states including 10,222 Health &Wellness Centes (HWC)/Sub centres.

The Indian Government has banned wheat exports with effect from May 13, citing a risk to food security, partly due to the war in Ukraine.
Wheat prices in India have risen to record highs, well above the government’s minimum support price. India’s wheat harvest has also suffered from record heat-wave. Rising food and energy prices pushed India’s retail inflation to an eight-year high in April.

The Chittagong or Chhatogram port is one of the important seaports of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina offered India to use the Chittagong Port when External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met her Dhaka.
Due to the sea port’s close proximity, the port facility has the potential to boost economic activity in the North-East Indian states including Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, as it provides close access to global shipping lanes.

A team of historians and archaeologists have recently discovered an ancient rock art site dating back to the Mesolithic era on a small hillock near Kasipeta village in Telangana.
Estimated to be at least 10,000 years old, this rock art has paintings of four bisons, two human figures, and an animal resembling a horse. The hillock is about 30 feet tall and many red ochre colour paintings on the inner side were identified.

French President Emmanuel Macron selected Labour Minister Elisabeth Borne as his new prime minister. This is only the second time in 30 years that a woman has been appointed to the prestigious role.
She succeeds the incumbent Prime Minister Jean Castex, as the country is expecting legislative elections in June. Edith Cresson occupied the office during the presidency of Socialist leader Francois Mitterrand in the early 1990s.
