World Leprosy Day (WLD) is observed on the last Sunday of January. In 2022, World Leprosy Day is 30 January.
The “United for Dignity” campaign calls for unity in honoring the dignity of people who have experienced leprosy. WHO Goodwill Ambassador for leprosy elimination launched “Don’t forget leprosy” campaign. In India, Anti-Leprosy Day is observed on 30 January, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Economic Survey 2021-22 has projected the Indian economy to grow at 8.0-8.5 per cent in 2022-23.
A 9.2 per cent expansion for 2021-22 has been outlined by the National Statistical Office (NSO) in its first advance estimates of GDP. This year’s growth comes on a low base year economic output and the expansion of next year would be seen from the recovery levels in economic output.

Ornithologists have recently described two new species of the flycatcher genus Cyornis and the white-eye genus Zosterops from Meratus Mountains of southeastern Borneo, Indonesia.
Cyornis is a genus of passerine birds, distributed throughout southern Asia, from the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Zosterops is a genus of passerine birds containing white-eyes.

The government has set up a National Land Monetisation Corporation (NLMC) to fast-track monetisation of land and non-core assets of public sector entities, as per the Economic Survey.
NLMC is being incorporated as a 100 per cent Government of India owned entity with an initial authorised share capital of Rs 5,000 crore. CPSEs have referred 3,400 acres of land and other non-core assets for monetisation, so far.

The Union Budget has announced to set up a Digital Ecosystem for Skilling and Livelihood or DESH-Stack e-portal.
It aims to empower citizens to skill, reskill or upskill through on-line training. The portal will provide trusted skill credentials to find relevant jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities. The Budget also announced that National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) will be aligned with dynamic industry needs.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander officially opened the Ijmuiden Sea Lock, which is claimed to be the largest sea lock in the world.
The 500-metre long and 70-metre-wide structure replaces a smaller 100-year-old one at Ijmuiden, a port city connecting the North Sea Canal to the port of Amsterdam. The structure is deep enough that ships will not have to wait for a favourable water level to enter the canal.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched “Project Sadbhawana”. It aims to dispose over 4-5 lakh pending files lying in the State secretariat within a year.
A portal will be created where people can inform of their pending files. Along with project Sadbhavana, a Swachhata Abhiyan in Janata Bhawan will also be launched to promote cleanliness in all the departments in the Secretariat.

Two Oil Giants- France’s TotalEnergies and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) signed a USD 10 million deal to develop Uganda’s energy resources and build a Regional oil pipeline.
The project aims to exploit the crude oil reserves at Lake Albert, a 160-kilometre natural border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Researchers have discovered a tiny new species of cynipid gall wasp in the branches of a live oak tree. It is the first insect species to be described alongside its fully sequenced genome.
The researchers are studying how the nonstinging wasps may have been impacted by Houston’s historic February 2021 freeze. The wasp was named Neuroterus Valhalla, after the location of its original discovery, as it was discovered at Valhalla, a student hangout at Rice University, USA.

The Delhi Government has announced to dedicate a nearly one-kilometre-long stretch in North Delhi to Olympic champions such as Neeraj Chopra, PV Sindhu, Ravi Dahiya and others.
It has been named as Olympics Vithi or Olympics Boulevard. This is a part of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s ambitious streetscaping project.
