Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi received Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, “The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia,” from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The award was conferred during a special ceremony at the Addis International Convention Centre. It recognises Modi’s exceptional contribution to strengthening India–Ethiopia partnership and his global leadership. He became the first head of state/head of government globally to receive this honour. He dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion (140 crore) people of India.

International Migrants Day is observed annually on 18 December to raise awareness about the rights, safety, and dignity of migrants and refugees worldwide. The day highlights the challenges people face when leaving their homes for safety, work, or better opportunities. Millions migrate due to conflict, climate events, economic hardship, or lack of opportunities. International Migrants Day emphasizes protecting migrants from exploitation, violence, and discrimination while ensuring fair and humane treatment. This year, the focus is also on remembering migrants and refugees who have lost their lives or gone missing while seeking safety.

BharatNet is an ambitious Government of India project approved in 2011 to provide broadband connectivity to all Gram Panchayats (GPs) in the country. It aims to offer open and unrestricted broadband access to telecom operators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Cable TV operators, and content providers to enable services such as e-health, e-education, and e-governance in rural areas. Phase I is complete and Phase II is ongoing and aims to connect 1.5 lakh additional Gram Panchayats. Phase III is ongoing and focuses on future-proofing the network by integrating 5G technology.

Uttar Pradesh will establish India’s first Forest University in Gorakhpur, focused on forestry, wildlife, and environmental sciences. The university will offer specialised programs in forestry, agroforestry, and conservation, combining academic and field-based research. A Forest University is a specialised institution providing higher education and research in forest sciences, wildlife conservation, ecosystem management, and environmental sustainability. It trains experts in areas like agroforestry, social forestry, horticulture, and biotechnology.

Jharkhand won their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025, beating Haryana by 69 runs in Pune. Captain Ishan Kishan smashed 101 off 49 balls; Kumar Kushagra scored 81 off 38. Jharkhand posted 262/3 in 20 overs – highest total in an Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) final and 5th highest overall. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a domestic Twenty20 (T20) cricket tournament in India. It is organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tournament is named after former Indian Test cricketer Syed Mushtaq Ali.

On 19 December 2025, 3 metric tonnes (MTs) of GI-tagged Indi Lime from Vijayapura, Karnataka were exported to Oman, marking a new global market entry. Earlier, 3 metric tonnes were first exported to Dubai on 24 August 2025; subsequent exports reached nearly 12 MTs due to strong demand. Indi Lime is mainly grown in Vijayapura district of Karnataka. It has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its superior quality, strong aroma, high juice yield, and balanced acidity.

The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) launched Good Governance Week 2025 from December 19 to 25, with guidelines for the nationwide ‘Prashasan Gaon Ki Ore’ campaign released by Secretary Rachna Shah. The initiative aims to strengthen citizen-centric governance with a focus on grassroots delivery of public services and grievance redressal. Good Governance Week is observed annually around the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (December 25) and has evolved into an action-oriented administrative campaign. The ‘Prashasan Gaon Ki Ore’ initiative places district administrations at the forefront of grievance redressal and public service delivery.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) hosted Exercise AviaIndra-2025, a joint air exercise with the Russian Federation Aerospace Force (RFASF), from December 15 to 22, 2025. Exercise AviaIndra reflects the long-standing Indo-Russian defence relationship and continues the series which began in 2014. Personnel from both countries are conducting joint flying operations on Su-30 MKI, Tejas, IL-78 aircraft, and Mi-17 helicopters. The exercise enables sharing of best practices, lessons learned, and operational expertise between the two air forces.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently launched RESPOND Basket 2025. The programme invites research proposals from premier universities and recognised academic and R&D institutions. It focuses on areas relevant to ISRO’s upcoming missions and national priorities. RESPOND Basket 2025 supports projects including the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, Chandrayaan-4, Gaganyaan missions, Venus orbiter, and a human Moon landing. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between ISRO and academic institutions and foster research aligned with India’s space ambitions.

Michaela Benthaus, a German engineer, became the first wheelchair user to travel to space. German engineer Michaela Benthaus became the first person with paraplegia to travel to space. The suborbital mission was conducted by Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space tourism company. This was the company’s 16th crewed flight, using the New Shepard NS-37 rocket.
