Scientists have raised concerns that Narpuh Wildlife Sanctuary is facing serious conservation challenges due to limestone mining and cement factory activities nearby. The sanctuary is located in the East Jaintia Hills district, near Jowai town, in Meghalaya. It was officially notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 2014, and it is the only protected area in the Jaintia Hills region. The sanctuary is surrounded by Reserve Forests on all sides except the south-west side, which shares a boundary with the Assam.

Singapore Changi Airport has been named the best international airport in the world for 2025 at India’s Best Awards by Travel+Leisure (T+L). The airport is known for sky-lit interiors, indoor gardens, art-filled spaces, and attractions like the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and butterfly gardens. The award was part of the 14th India’s Best Awards, reflecting traveller preferences through online voting. Changi Airport sets global benchmarks by combining efficiency, comfort, and design, making it a destination in itself.

Odisha hosts the Regional Artificial Intelligence (AI) Impact Conference from December 19–20, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) in governance and public service delivery. Odisha AI Policy 2025, along with policies in FinTech, Global Capability Centres, and advanced electronics, supports large-scale, responsible AI adoption. The state aims to build a complete AI innovation ecosystem with strong governance, digital capabilities, and long-term policy certainty. The conference’s objectives align with the India AI Impact Summit and focus on sustainability and inclusive growth guided by the “Three Ps – Planet, People, and Progress.”

Switzerland is ranked the world’s most resilient country for investors in 2025, according to Henley & Partners and AlphaGeo Global Investment Risk and Resilience Index. Switzerland scored 88.42 overall, with a risk score of 9.1 (low risk) and resilience score of 85.94 (high resilience), driven by innovation, governance, and social stability. Singapore is the only Asian country in the top 10, ranking 4th, with the lowest legal and regulatory risk globally. India ranks 104th with a total investment risk and resilience score of 54.42, showing moderate resilience (resilience score 49.76) but elevated risks. India’s high risk profile is due to uncertain political, legal, and regulatory environments, combined with exposure to physical climate hazards.

On 18 December 2025, King Tupou VI appointed Lord Fakafanua (age 40) as Tonga’s 20th Prime Minister during a private audience at the Royal Palace, Nuku’alofa. Lord Fakafanua, representing Noble’s Representative, Ha’apai 1, won the secret ballot 16–10 among elected MPs. The secret ballot ensures voting confidentiality, as per the Constitution. The appointment marks a continuation of constitutional procedures and emphasizes balancing loyalty and competence in Cabinet selection.

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the National Conference for Chairpersons of Public Service Commissions in Hyderabad, Telangana on 19 December 2025. Public Service Commissions must uphold ideals of equality, justice and welfare as guided by Preamble, Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles. Commissions should ensure equality of opportunity and aim for equality of outcomes. They act as change agents promoting equity and support permanent executive continuity. Civil servants must be sensitive to women, marginalised and vulnerable groups; gender sensitisation required. Strong, effective governance is needed as India targets becoming third-largest economy and achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Armenia has unveiled the logo for COP17 to the Convention on Biological Diversity, featuring Polyommatus eriwanensis, a blue butterfly endemic to Yerevan. The logo appears with the slogan “Taking action for nature”, emphasizing the conference’s focus on moving from commitments to practical implementation. COP17, scheduled for October 2026, will host the first global review of countries’ implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which has 23 targets ranging from habitat protection to reforming subsidies harmful to biodiversity.

China separated Hainan Island from mainland customs to support entry into a trans-Pacific trade deal and develop a Hong Kong-style commercial hub. Hainan is China’s southernmost tropical island, located in the northeastern Beibu Gulf, across the Qiongzhou Strait. It is known as the “Hawaii of China”. It covers 35,400 sq. km, the largest island administered by China. The island has a population of about 10 million; its capital Haikou is called the “Coconut City.”

Michaela Benthaus, a German engineer, became the first wheelchair user to travel to space. German engineer Michaela Benthaus became the first person with paraplegia to travel to space. The suborbital mission was conducted by Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space tourism company. This was the company’s 16th crewed flight, using the New Shepard NS-37 rocket.
