Notes:
Armand Duplantis (Sweden) and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (USA) were named World Athletes of the Year 2025 at the World Athletics Awards. Duplantis broke the men’s pole vault world record four times and won all 16 competitions, including indoor and outdoor world titles. He is the first male pole vaulter in modern athletics to remain undefeated in a single event for two consecutive years. McLaughlin-Levrone won the women’s 400 metre title in Tokyo in 47.78 seconds, breaking a 42-year-old World Championships record. She is the first athlete to win world titles in both 400 metre flat and 400 metre hurdles.

India won the silver medal in hockey at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 in Ipoh, Malaysia. Belgium defeated India 1-0, with Thibeau Stockbroekx scoring the only goal. This was Belgium’s first trophy in their second appearance at the tournament. India returned after a six-year gap and finished as runners-up for the second consecutive time, having lost the 2019 final to Republic of Korea. India, with five titles, remains the second-most successful team, after Australia who have 10 wins.

Dr. Tessy Thomas, called the Missile Woman of India, received the 8th Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios Award 2025 for excellence in science and women empowerment. She is a senior scientist at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). She was the first Indian woman to lead a missile project and headed Agni-IV and Agni-V ballistic missile programmes. She is also known as “Agniputri”, meaning one born of fire. The award is given by the Sophia Society of the Malankara Orthodox Church in memory of Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios.

The first International and 31st Annual Conference of Sahodaya School Complexes opens at Grand Hyatt Dubai as the first global edition of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) platform. More than 1,000 school leaders and educators join under the theme “Rooted in Wisdom, Rising with Vision: Reimagining Education through National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.” The conference promotes global collaboration, NEP 2020 implementation, innovation in teaching, and holistic education. 106 CBSE schools in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and 213 in the Gulf serve 2.5 lakh students. From 2026–27, CBSE introduces standard and advanced levels from Class 9 and launches CBSE Global Curriculum 26.

The Regional Artificial Intelligence (AI) Impact Conference 2025 was held at the State Convention Centre, Shillong, ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026. The conference focuses on people, planet, and progress, the three pillars of the AI Impact Summit. The government has allocated Rs 10,300 crore for AI development and set up 570 data and AI labs nationwide. The target is to train 10 lakh people in AI skills to enhance future employability.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was found non-compliant in stopping untreated sewage from entering Powai Lake. National Green Tribunal (NGT) committee recommended a fine of Rs 5 lakh per month per inlet if the action plan is violated. Powai Lake is an artificial lake in northern Mumbai, Maharashtra. It lies near Western Ghats and has a catchment area of 6.6 square kilometres.

A new spider species named Dolomedes indicus was discovered in the evergreen rainforests of Western Ghats in Wayanad district, Kerala. It is the first recorded species of the Dolomedes genus, also called raft or fishing spiders, found in India. Unlike house spiders, it is an active semi-aquatic hunter that hunts on water surfaces. It senses vibrations using water surface tension and quickly jumps to catch insects or small fish. It can swim and dive in water.

International Anti-Corruption Day is observed every year on 9 December. It spreads awareness about the harmful effects of corruption on society, governance, development and equality. The theme for 2025 is “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity”. It focuses on the role of youth in promoting honesty and ethical behaviour. It emphasises integrity, accountability and collective action at all levels. It highlights the roles of governments, institutions and citizens in fighting corruption. It encourages students to develop moral values and civic responsibility early in life.

Telangana hosted the Rising Global Summit 2025 in Hyderabad on 8 December. The two-day summit features 27 sessions on energy, Information Technology (IT), healthcare, and startups. Major organisations like World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are involved. The summit aims to position Telangana as a global growth and innovation hub.

Notes:
Fresh lava fountains erupted from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, almost a year after its ongoing eruptive phase began. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, located in the southeastern part of Hawaii Island, United States. It is a shield-type volcano, formed due to the Hawaiian hot spot. The summit caldera contains the lava lake Halema‘uma‘u, considered the home of the Hawaiian volcano goddess, Pele.
