Notes:
World Lion Day is celebrated on August 10 every year in a bid to raise awareness on lions. The day also seeks to mobilise support for protection and conservation of Lion. As per World Wide Fund for animals (WWF), it only lives in grasslands and plains. India is home to majestic Asiatic Lion, who inhabit protected territory of Sasan-Gir National Park. According to WWF, lions were once found throughout Africa, Asia and Europe. But over the years, their numbers have reduced across these continents. Initiative to protect lion started in 2013 so the first World Lion Day was observed in 2013 itself. Since then, the day has become a symbol of fight towards protection of lion. Last remaining population of the Asiatic Lions are found in Gir National Park of Gujarat.

Uttar Pradesh government has renamed a landmark freedom movement called “Kakori Train Conspiracy” as “Kakori Train Action” and paid tributes to the revolutionaries who were hanged for robbing a train at Kakori in Uttar Pradesh. Revolutionaries had robbed the train in order to buy weapons in 1925. Freedom fighters Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan and Roshan Singh were hanged to death on December 19, 1927 for their involvement in Kakori robbery.

India is ranked 122nd on a new Global Youth Development Index measuring the condition of young people across 181 countries, released by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London on 10th August, 2021. Singapore ranked topmost while Niger came last. The index ranks countries between 0.00 (lowest) and 1.00 (highest) according to the developments in youth education, employment, health, equality and inclusion, peace and security, and political and civic participation. It looks at 27 indicators including literacy and voting to showcase the state of the world’s 1.8 billion people between the age of 15 and 29.

Grameen Foundation India (GFI) launched the Tech4Inclusion challenge for augmented reality-based solutions to advance financial literacy and inclusion. Grameen Foundation India is a social impact organization, working on financial inclusion, agriculture-based livelihoods, and health initiatives with the mission to enable the poor, especially women to overcome poverty and hunger. The challenge invites technology startups working on cutting edge augmented reality/virtual reality technologies and encourages them to come up with innovative solutions to address the challenges in advancing digital and financial inclusion of low-income people, particularly women.

Indore, the country’s cleanest city, has now been declared as the first ‘water plus’ city of India under the Swachh Survekshan 2021, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday. Indore City received the certification from the centre on Wednesday. Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned loan worth Rs 188.81 crore to Goa Government towards construction of super specialty block and enhancement of solid waste management and treatment plan at Saligao for the current financial year 2021-22. For the ongoing financial year, a cumulative loan of Rs 217.72 crore has been sanctioned to the State government for various social infrastructure projects under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). RIDF was introduced with the sole objective of giving low cost funding support to State Governments and State owned Corporations for quick completion of projects related to Medium and Minor Irrigation, Soil Conservation and others forms of rural/social infrastructure.

Pakistan has test-fired a surface-to-surface ballistic missile named ‘Ghaznavi’ on August 12, 2021. This is a nuclear-capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile ‘Ghaznavi’ which can strike targets up to 290 kilometres. The Ghaznavi missile has been tested in both day and night modes.

Coal India arm Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) has collaborated with Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board to promote and boost Singrauli eco-tourism circuit, giving thrust to mine tourism under sustainable development initiatives. The collaboration will facilitate the development of eco-mine tourism and eco-parks which will also generate employment and business opportunities for the locals. This initiative will explore a new tourism circuit in Madhya Pradesh having beauty mining, wildlife, cultural heritage and adventure. This will also foster mine tourism entailing the importance of Singrauli as Energy Capital of India. NCL-IIT (BHU) Incubation Centre will facilitate research, gather information, design and operate the tour plans for incoming tourists.

• Asia’s first demonstration facility for medical wastewater treatment using electron beam (EB) technology has started operations in China.
• This is the first pilot scale demonstration (400 cubic meters per day) of EB for medical wastewater treatment.
• This facility is located in the Hubei Province and it disinfects medical wastewater and decomposes antibiotics without the need of additional disinfectant or the production of secondary pollution.
• The International Atomic Energy Agency has played a major role in EB application in China.

• Legendary German striker Gerd Müller died aged 75 on August 15, 2021.
• The forward scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany, including the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final against Holland.
• During 15 years at Bayern Munich, Müller netted a record 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga games and 66 goals in 74 European matches.
• He was nicknamed “Bomber der Nation” (“the nation’s Bomber”) or simply “Der Bomber” and was named European Footballer of the Year (Ballon d’Or) in 1970.
