Notes:
According to the Orbital Debris Quarterly News, published by a NASA Office, there are 25,182 pieces of space debris (of sizes larger than 10 cm) in the lower earth orbits (within 2,000 km of earth’s surface).
Out of these, the debris from Indian space assets is only 114, the lowest among major space-faring nations and around the same level as in 2018. India has 103 active and defunct spacecraft that are also in orbit, against the USA, China and Russia which have the largest number of active or defunct satellites, as well as space debris, at several thousands.

A scholar of political science, Manoj Soni has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC).
Manoj Soni specialises in International Relations and had served as the Vice Chancellor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University and MS University of Baroda. He was also the youngest Vice Chancellor in independent India.

Monacan race car driver Charles Leclerc clinched victory in the Australian Grand Prix to move into a commanding position in the World Championship.
The Ferrari driver was in total control of the race when his main rival Max Verstappen retired with a technical failure. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was second followed by Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton

Australia’s Victoria state will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the multi-sport gathering for mostly former British colonies.
The four of the last five editions were held in Australia or Britain. The 2026 Games will be spread across four regional hubs in the state, in the cities of Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland. The English city of Birmingham will host the 2022 edition from July 28.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya’, a museum dedicated to all the prime ministers of the country since independence.
The Prime Ministers’ museum comprises of a total of 43 galleries. There are displays from the freedom struggle and the framing of the constitution. The ‘Sangrahalaya’ highlights the achievements of the prime ministers.

The 131st birth anniversary of one of the greatest Indian leaders B R Ambedkar was celebrated across the country on April 14.
A jurist and economist by profession, he served as Law and Justice Minister in the first cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru. Ambedkar is remembered for his contributions in drafting the Indian Constitution and for standing up for the rights of Dalits. In 1990, he was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna- India’s highest civilian award.

Team India and Mumbai Indians Captain Rohit Sharma has become the second Indian batter to complete 10,000 runs in T20 cricket for men.
Virat Kohli became the first Indian batter to score 10,000 T20 runs last year while West Indies legend Chris Gayle was the first cricketer in the world to reach the five-figure mark in T20 cricket. Rohit Sharma achieved this historic milestone during the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS).

State-owned NHPC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the district administration of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh for development of green hydrogen technologies to produce hydrogen.
This project will be implemented by NHPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NHPC. The research and development department of NHPC and Chamera-II Power Station of NHPC will also be part of the project.

The United Kingdom signed a deal with Rwanda to send some asylum-seekers to the East African country, to eliminate human trafficking.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that anyone entering the UK illegally may now be relocated to Rwanda. The United Nations said the deal raised several human rights concerns. As part of the pilot scheme, the UK paid the Rwanda £120 million for housing and integrating the migrants.

Notes:
The 2022 edition of the Invictus Games is held in The Hague, Netherlands. During the inaugural event, Prince Harry paid tribute to the Ukrainian team.
The first edition of the Games was held in London in 2014 and the 2023 edition will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Invictus Games are an international sporting competition meant for wounded and sick military service personnel and war veterans.
