Dipika Pallikal teamed up with Saurav Ghosal, in her first competitive event since October 2018 and clinched the mixed doubles title with win over England’s Adrian Waller and Alison Waters.
Dipika and Joshna Chinappa won in the women’s doubles final, against England’s Sarah Jane Perry and Waters. Dipika achieved this feat less than six months after giving birth to twins.

According to the Orbital Debris Quarterly News, published by a NASA Office, there are 25,182 pieces of space debris (of sizes larger than 10 cm) in the lower earth orbits (within 2,000 km of earth’s surface).
Out of these, the debris from Indian space assets is only 114, the lowest among major space-faring nations and around the same level as in 2018. India has 103 active and defunct spacecraft that are also in orbit, against the USA, China and Russia which have the largest number of active or defunct satellites, as well as space debris, at several thousands.

Notes:
The United Nations General Assembly established April 12 to be the International Day of Human Space Flight. On April 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.
The International Day of Human Space Flight is commemorates this occasion, which paved the way for space exploration for the benefit of humanity.

Notes:
The Government of India in the year 2003 designated 11 April as National Safe Motherhood Day. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi.
The day is marked annually in India and aims to raise awareness about the care required by pregnant woman before, during, and after childbirth. National Safe Motherhood Day is an initiative undertaken by the White Ribbon Alliance.

Notes:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) revised down its forecast for global trade growth in 2022-23 to 3% from 4.7%.
The slash is because of the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war. WTO also warned of a potential food crisis caused by surging prices. It also forecasted that the global trade growth in 2023 would rise up to 3.4%.

The data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that the retail inflation rate in India rose to 6.95 per cent in March from a year ago.
The rate stands above the tolerance limit of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the third straight month. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew 1.7 per cent in February on annual basis but contracted 4.7 per cent month on month.

For the second consecutive year, Hyderabad has been recognised as one of the ‘Tree Cities of the World’.
It is a tag presented by Arbor Day Foundation and Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations. Over 3.50 Crore trees have been planted over the last two years, according to the certification of recognition given to the city. Mumbai was received the tag.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu presented the International Gandhi Award for Leprosy, 2021 to Dr Bhushan Kumar from Chandigarh and Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust, Gujarat.
The annual award was instituted by Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation. The National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) has been trying to ensure total eradication of leprosy in India.

Notes:
Himachal Diwas (Himachal Day) is celebrated on April 15 every year. It was on this day in 1948 that Himachal Pradesh was created as a province of India after the integration of 28 small princely states.
On this day, the state’s Chief Minister announced various new schemes including 50 per cent discount in HRTC buses for women, Zero bill to all power consumers up to 125 units, No water bill for all the families living in rural areas etc. Mukhya Mantri Grihini Suvidha Yojna, Jan Mach, Sahara Yojna, CM Himcare scheme and Mukhya Mantri Shagun Yojna are some other schemes of the state.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that the birth anniversary of Siddalinga Swami will be celebrated as ‘Integration Day’.
Siddalinga Swami of Tontadarya Mutt in Gadag was a thinker and philosopher. He led the ‘Save Kappatagudda’ movement, which forced the Government to declare it a wildlife sanctuary.
