Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and Sangeet Natak Awards for the year 2018 on distinguished artists.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship was given to four artistes: Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, Dancer and choreographer Jatin Goswami, Dancer Sonal Mansingh and Dance teacher Thiruvidaimarudur Kuppiah Kalyanasundaram. 40 others were honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards and the Lalit Kala Akademi Awards were also presented.

Notes:
Ministry of Home Affairs introduced the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, 2022’. It was passed by both Houses of Parliament recently.
The bill was being brought as the ‘Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920’ became obsolete. The government turned down demands that the Bill should be referred to a Standing Committee for consideration.

Notes:
The United Nations General Assembly established April 12 to be the International Day of Human Space Flight. On April 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.
The International Day of Human Space Flight is commemorates this occasion, which paved the way for space exploration for the benefit of humanity.

Notes:
The Government of India in the year 2003 designated 11 April as National Safe Motherhood Day. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi.
The day is marked annually in India and aims to raise awareness about the care required by pregnant woman before, during, and after childbirth. National Safe Motherhood Day is an initiative undertaken by the White Ribbon Alliance.

As per a new report, the Weija dam, which provides 80 per cent of the drinking water supply of Ghana’s capital, Accra, is prone to flooding.
‘Ghana: Roadmap for resilient infrastructure in a changing climate’ has been prepared by the Ghanaian government with assistance from various United Nations agencies. The report noted that 54 per cent of dams assessed are exposed to floods and 23 per cent to droughts by 2050.

The ‘National Conference on Cooperation Policy’ was recently organised in New Delhi.  Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation Amit Shah addressed the conference.
He has stressed the need for a new cooperative policy in the country. He also announced that the Centre will come up with the new policy which will address the issue of Primary Agricultural Credit Society to Apex Cooperative Federation.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi launched the ‘Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), the ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ program, under the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
Approved in 2018, it aims to transform selected districts and help 2.78 lakh rural local bodies achieve sustainable development goals. The Union Cabinet approved a financial outlay of Rs 5,911 crore for the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA). It approved the continuation of the centrally sponsored scheme from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2026.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu presented the International Gandhi Award for Leprosy, 2021 to Dr Bhushan Kumar from Chandigarh and Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust, Gujarat.
The annual award was instituted by Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation. The National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) has been trying to ensure total eradication of leprosy in India.

Each year, on 15 April, World Art Day is being celebrated across the world by the International Association of Art (IAA), a UNESCO partner.
The celebration to promote the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art, was proclaimed at the 40th session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 2019. It aims to encourage greater awareness of the diversity of artistic expressions and highlight the contribution of artists to sustainable development.

Notes:
Alliance Air was founded in 1996 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of then Indian Airlines, which later merged with Air India.
It was an esrtwhile part of Air India before the latter’s divestment and mainly operates on domestic regional routes as part of the government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme. It was announced that Alliance Air will no longer be part of Air India and will be run as an independent business unit under Government of India.
