Notes:
The World Bank (WB)  will provide Rs 3,000 crore assistance to finance, mini and mega food parks across the country. This move will help boost farmers’ income. This information was revealed by the Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Rameswar Teli during the  15th Indo-US Economic Summit. The summit was organized by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce-North India Council (IACC-NIC) in New Delhi on 13th September.

In Badminton, Sourabh Verma clinched the men’s singles title at the 2019 Vietnam Open Super 100 title  at the Ho Chi Minh City. He defeated China’s Sun Fei Xiang in a thrilling summit clash by 21-12, 17-2, 21-14. This victory marks Verma’s second Super 100 win in the ongoing calendar year. He had won the Hyderabad Open earlier in August.

The Kerala government and the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) have jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maldives (GoM) to strengthen cancer care in the island nation. The aim of the pact is to bolster cancer care programmes in the Maldives through the expertise of RCC.  As part of the agreement, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory staff with the health care centres in the Maldives are to be provided with special training at RCC.

Sanjib Datta (54), the renowned Bollywood editor, has passed away in Kolkata on 15th September 2019.  He worked on films like “Dor”, “Mardani”, “Iqbal”, “Ek Hasini Thi”. Datta has been credited for editing more than 80 films, including Hindi and Bengali. He worked with filmmakers like Kundan Shah, Sriram Raghavan, Pradeep Sarkar among others.

The pictorial  book titled “Turbulence & Triumph: The Modi Years” has been jointly authored by Rahul Agarwal and Bharathi S Pradhan. It traces the journey of Narendra Modi from his days as a young boy from Vadnagar in Gujarat to New Delhi’s 7, Lok Kalyan Marg as the 14th prime minister of India. It is replete with anecdotes from family, friends, colleagues, associates, testimonials of leaders from India and the world across party lines.

Veteran Malayalam actor Sathar (67), who was known for his character roles in films, has passed away at Aluva on 17th September 2019.  He has over 300 movies to his credit, including Tamil and Telugu films. At the height of his acting career, Sathar married his popular co-star Jayabharathy in 1979 though they got separated later. Their son Krish Sathar is also an actor besides running his own business in London.

Wing Commander Anjali Singh  has become the India’s first female Indian Armed Forces (IAF) Officer to be posted as a military diplomat in any of the Indian missions abroad. She joined the Indian Embassy in Russia as the Deputy Air Attache. Singh is an aeronautical engineer who served with fighter squadrons during her 17-year military career. An air attache is an Air Force officer who is part of a diplomatic mission and  typically represents the chief of his home air force in the foreign country where he or she serves.

Justice P. Lakshman Reddy, a retired judge of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court, has been sworn in as the first Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh since the State was bifurcated in 2014. He will hold the position for a period of 5 years. Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan administered the oath to him at Tummalapalli Kshetrayya Kalakshetram. The YSR Congress government amended the Lokayukta Act in the recent budget session & enabled appointment of a retired judge as Lokayukta, which pave the way for constituting the corruption-probing body.

A dataset titled ‘International Migrant Stock 2019’ has recently released by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The data provides the latest estimates of the number of international migrants by age, sex and origin for all countries and areas of the world.  As per UN report, India is the leading country of origin of international migrants in 2019 with a 17.5 million strong diaspora. Migrants from Mexico constituted the 2nd largest diaspora with 11.8 million people followed by China with 10.7 million people and Russia with 10.5 million people. The report says  that the number of migrants globally reached an estimated 272 million.

The Telangana government has decided to declare 2020 as Year of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by organizing various activities related to the emerging technology. The state government has also signed pact with NITI Aayog, which released the ‘National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence’ to run pilot projects in the state.
