Notes:
The Kerala government has decided to set up India’s first international women’s trade centre (iWTC) in Kozhikode to accelerate women entrepreneurship and secure gender parity. It is in consonance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The first phase of iWTC is being executed under the Gender Park’s “Vision 2020”. It is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) has selected McKinsey & Company to set up India’s first Digital Capability Centre (DCC), which will showcase advanced technologies and provide a test bed for emerging innovations. McKinsey supports five such digital capability centres across the globe – Aachen, Chicago, Singapore, Venice, and Beijing. DCC is a unique digital manufacturing learning centre offering company leaders and their workforces hands-on experience and workshops in next generation technology to help them advance their operations, design and productivity and can be used at all levels of the value chain.

In Cycling, Ronaldo Laitonjam from India has won his 4th gold medal at the 2019 Track Asia Cup competition at the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium in New Delhi. He also created a new Asian record by clocking 10.065 seconds in the qualifying round of the men’s junior 200m time trial event in the tournament. Previously, the record was held by China’s Liu Qi. Overall, India topped the medals tally with 10 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze.

IPS officer Chhaya Sharma, who led the investigation into the brutal 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape, has been chosen for the 2019 Asia Society Game Changers award along with six others for redefining the role of female police officers. The award identifies and honours true leaders who are making a positive contribution to the future of Asia. This is the first time that all the awardees are women since the awards were launched in 2014.

MC Mary Kom from Manipur has become the first Indian woman athlete to be recommended for Padma Vibhushan by the Sports Ministry. She is the only woman to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the seven world championships.  If recommendations are accepted, Mary Kom will become the 4th sports personality to receive the Padma Vibhushan after chess great Vishwanathan Anand, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary. Mary Kom won the Padma Bhushan in 2013 and Padma Shri in 2006.

Notes:
Indian ace sprinter Hima Das from Assam has been named as the brand ambassador of PepsiCo India for its sports drink brand Gatorade. With this feat, she  joined ace badminton player PV Sindhu and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra as the brand’s ambassador in the country. Gatorade India will work with Hima Das during the period of partnership to understand her training and race-day nutrition better.

Notes:
The 7th edition of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020 will be hosted by India from 2nd to 21st November 2020. The host cities for the tournament are yet to be approved with FIFA. Spain are the defending champions. India had previously hosted the men’s U-17 World Cup in 2017.

The book titled “Fortune Turners: The Quartet That Spun India To Glory” has been authored by Aditya Bhushan and Sachin Bajaj. It is an ode to the famous Indian spin quartet of Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrashekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who took 853 Test wickets among them.

According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India has become the 4th country after the US, UK and Germany to have its own national standard on bulletproof jacket which provides 360-degree protection. Now, India has also begun exporting bulletproof jackets as per its own standards to over 100 countries including European nations. As per the BIS norms, two PSUs Medani and Ordnance factory at Avadi, Chennai and private firms SNPP (Palwal), Starwire (Faridabad) in Haryana and MKU (Kanpur) in Uttar Pradesh are manufacturing bulletproof jackets. The BIS is a national body that sets quality standards for various products and services.
