The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) has recently organized the National Conference on “Criminal Activities and Radicalization in Jails : Vulnerability of Inmates and Jail Staff and their Protection”  in New Delhi. The aim of the 2-day Conference is to provide a platform for the prison personnel of all ranks at the national level to share their candid views on various operational as well as administrative issues.

Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Sanjay Dhotre has recently launched the Curriculum for Life Skills (Jeevan Kaushal) designed by University Grants Commission (UGC) in New Delhi. The curriculum cover the set of human talents acquired by an individual via classroom learning or life experience that can help them to deal with problems encountered in day to day life. This includes the core skills each individual must possess internally as well as externally for the betterment of self and the society as a whole.

IPS officer Chhaya Sharma, who led the investigation into the brutal 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape, has been chosen for the 2019 Asia Society Game Changers award along with six others for redefining the role of female police officers. The award identifies and honours true leaders who are making a positive contribution to the future of Asia. This is the first time that all the awardees are women since the awards were launched in 2014.

The Uttarakhand government has recently launched Mukhyamantri Dal Poshit Yojana (MDPY)  to provide low-priced pulses for poor in the State. As per scheme, two kg of pulses at subsidised rates  would be made available to 23.32 lakh ration card holders every month. The Chana dal (chick peas split) is being made available at a rate of Rs 44 per kg / month. The current market rate of this pulse is Rs 65 to 70 per kg.

Indian ace sprinter Hima Das from Assam has been named as the brand ambassador of PepsiCo India for its sports drink brand Gatorade. With this feat, she  joined ace badminton player PV Sindhu and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra as the brand’s ambassador in the country. Gatorade India will work with Hima Das during the period of partnership to understand her training and race-day nutrition better.

Lieutenant General (retired) Abhijit Guha has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as the Chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) and head of the United Nations Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA). He has been tasked with leading the UN oversight of a ceasefire agreement between Yemen’s government and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the strife-torn Yemen’ port city of Hodeidah. He will succeed Lieutenant General Michael Lollesgaard.

In Jaipur, the Rajasthan government has launched  a ‘Jan Soochna Portal’ to provide information about government authorities and departments suo motu to the public in the true spirit of the Right To Information (RTI) Act. It is claimed that the site is the first of its kind in India that  will bring transparency and accountability, and empower the right of the people to seek information.

On 14th September 2019, Indian cricket team clinched the 8th edition of ACC Under-19 Asia Cup title with a thrilling 5-run win over Bangladesh in a low-scoring final at Colombo. Left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar was emerged as the star of the Indian team, with figures of 5 for 28 from 8 overs.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has been conferred the Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award 2019 in Dhaka for her vision of a peaceful and prosperous South Asia, free of tension, conflicts and terrorism. It acknowledged her contribution to fostering cooperation between India and Bangladesh. The award has been instituted in the memory of former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It is given every year to honour statesmen or leaders who have shown excellence in their fields to achieve the best for their countries

Justice P. Lakshman Reddy, a retired judge of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court, has been sworn in as the first Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh since the State was bifurcated in 2014. He will hold the position for a period of 5 years. Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan administered the oath to him at Tummalapalli Kshetrayya Kalakshetram. The YSR Congress government amended the Lokayukta Act in the recent budget session & enabled appointment of a retired judge as Lokayukta, which pave the way for constituting the corruption-probing body.
