PM-KISAN 21st Instalment Supports Flood-Hit Farmers
The Government of India released the 21st instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, prioritising farmers in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. These states recently endured severe floods and landslides. The relief fund aims to ease the hardships faced by millions of farmers affected by the calamities.
Context of the 21st Instalment Release
The instalment was announced by the Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan via video conference. It targeted over 27 lakh farmers, including 2.7 lakh women farmers. The total amount disbursed exceeded ₹540 crore. The support comes after massive crop losses and livelihood disruptions caused by natural disasters in the three states.
Purpose and Impact of Financial Support
Each eligible farmer received ₹2,000 under this instalment. The amount is intended to meet immediate household expenses and enable the purchase of seeds and fertilisers for the next sowing season. The instalment also aims to restore farmers’ confidence and ensure the continuation of agricultural activities despite recent setbacks.
Government’s Broader Relief Measures
Earlier, the Prime Minister announced comprehensive relief packages totalling ₹4,300 crore for the three states. These included ₹1,500 crore for Himachal Pradesh, ₹1,600 crore for Punjab, and ₹1,200 crore for Uttarakhand. Additional support covers ex-gratia payments to families of the deceased and injured, along with assistance under the PM CARES for Children scheme.
Significance of PM-KISAN Scheme
Launched in February 2019, PM-KISAN provides direct income support to farmers across India. The cumulative disbursement to Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand has now crossed ₹13,626 crore. The scheme’s timely instalments play a vital role in cushioning farmers against economic shocks and natural disasters.
Government’s Commitment to Farmers
The Agriculture Minister reiterated the Government’s resolve to support farmers in all circumstances. The instalment release serves as a reassurance that no farmer will be left behind during crises. A short documentary denoting the farmers’ struggles and relief efforts was showcased during the event, emphasising the human dimension of the calamities.
