Over 15 Crore Homes Connected Under Jal Jeevan Mission

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has made remarkable progress by providing tap water connections to over 15.71 crore rural households. This achievement covers more than 80 percent of rural homes across India. As the mission moves into its next phase, the focus shifts to ensuring long-term sustainability, functionality, and reliable water service delivery. District administrations now play a key role in this effort. Recently, the Ministry of Jal Shakti organised the first District Collectors Peyjal Samvad in New Delhi to strengthen district-led governance and promote innovation.

Overview of Jal Jeevan Mission

Launched to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections, JJM aims to improve rural health and hygiene. The mission emphasises sustainable water supply systems that function efficiently over time. It targets universal coverage by involving local institutions and communities.

Current Progress and Coverage

More than 15.71 crore rural households have tap water connections. This represents over 80 percent coverage nationwide. The rapid expansion has improved access to clean water, reducing dependence on unsafe sources. The mission has accelerated rural development and enhanced quality of life.

Focus on Sustainability and Functionality

The new phase prioritises sustainable water supply management. This means systems must be reliable and functional long term. Maintenance, water quality monitoring, and community involvement are essential. The mission seeks to avoid disruptions and ensure continuous service.

Role of District Administrations

District Collectors are central to implementing JJM effectively. They act as a bridge between government policy and rural communities. Their leadership ensures proper planning, execution, and monitoring. The recent Peyjal Samvad promotes peer learning and sharing of best practices among districts.

Innovation and Governance Reforms

The mission encourages innovation in water management and governance. District-led initiatives help tailor solutions to local needs. Empowering local bodies enhances accountability and responsiveness. This reform approach strengthens rural water infrastructure and institutional capacity.

Community Participation and Local Institutions

Local institutions and community groups are key stakeholders. Their involvement ensures ownership and better upkeep of water systems. Awareness campaigns and training help communities manage water resources responsibly. This participatory approach supports mission sustainability.
