National Initiative on Water Security Launched in India
The Government of India has recently launched a major programme aimed at enhancing water security across rural areas. This initiative focuses on integrating water conservation with rural employment schemes to ensure sustainable use of water resources.
Launch and Key Ministers
The National Initiative on Water Security was jointly launched by the Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and the Jal Shakti Minister, C R Patil, in New Delhi. The programme emphasises the critical role of water conservation in rural development and agriculture.
Funding Allocation Under MGNREGA
A fixed portion of funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) will now be dedicated to water conservation works. Specifically, 65 per cent of MGNREGA funds will be allocated to water-related projects in over-exploited and critical rural blocks. In semi-critical rural blocks, 40 per cent of the funds will be used for similar purposes.
Focus on Water Conservation
The initiative aims to address water scarcity by promoting conservation activities such as rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, watershed management, and sustainable irrigation practices. These measures are designed to improve water availability for agriculture, livestock, and rural communities.
Benefits for Environment and Agriculture
The programme is expected to benefit not only farmers but also future generations, wildlife, and the environment. By securing water resources, it supports agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods while maintaining ecological balance.
Government Priority and Rural Development
The Jal Shakti Minister brought into light that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently prioritised water conservation in government policies. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of ensuring water security and promoting sustainable rural development.
