Marco Rubio to Visit India for Quad Talks

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India from 23 May to 26 May 2026. The visit will be his first trip to India as the top diplomat of the United States and will include meetings in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.

Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Rubio will attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on 26 May 2026. The meeting will also include Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Quad as a Strategic Grouping

The Quad is a four-nation grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the United States. It was formed as a consultative platform and is linked with cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, including maritime security and supply-chain resilience.

Key Areas of Discussion

The visit is expected to cover energy security, trade, defence cooperation and regional issues linked to West Asia. Maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz is also part of the expected agenda, along with broader Indo-Pacific stability.

India-US Bilateral Engagements

Rubio is expected to hold bilateral talks with S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. A meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also possible during the visit.

Critical Minerals Initiative

Rubio previously hosted Quad counterparts in July 2025, when the grouping launched the Critical Minerals Initiative. Critical minerals include lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements, which are used in batteries, electronics and defence equipment.
