The Central Water Commission (CWC) classifies Indian river basins into major, medium, and minor categories based on catchment size. Major river basins cover catchment areas exceeding 20,000 square kilometers and account for the vast majority of the country’s surface water potential. Managing these water systems requires storage infrastructure like dams, reservoirs, and barrages to meet agricultural, industrial, and domestic demands.

Classification and Geographic Distribution of River Basins

Himalayan vs. Peninsular Systems
  • Himalayan river systems include the Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra, which are perennial and fed by snowmelt and seasonal rainfall.
  • Peninsular river systems include the Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi, and Cauvery, which are rain-fed and experience heavy discharge during the Indian summer monsoon.
  • According to the CWC, India has 20 major river basins and 42 medium river basins (catchment areas between 2,000 and 20,000 square kilometers).

Ganga River Basin
  • The Ganga Basin is the largest river basin in India, covering over 26% of the country’s total land area across 11 states.
  • It originates at Devprayag from the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in Uttarakhand.
  • Key storage structures include the Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi River, which is the tallest dam in India at 260.5 meters.
